There are two questions at an anniversary and they get confused constantly.

The three stages
Early years: the problem is that everything is worth keeping. At year two you have not yet taken enough for editing to be the hard part. Small formats work, and a short book made now is worth more later than a long one made at year ten.
Middle years: the problem is the gap. Somewhere between year five and year fifteen the photographs stop. Same flat, same jobs, nothing new to point a camera at. The archive from those years is thinner than the archive from year one, which surprises everyone.

Why the tradition and the size are different questions
Worth separating properly, because conflating them is what produces a copper bottle.
The traditional material answers “what is this year called”. It is a naming convention from a list that stabilised in the 1930s, and it is useful mainly as a prompt — a reason to do something on a date you might otherwise let pass.
The archive answers “what is there to say”. That one is not a convention. It is a fact about your own photographs, it changes every year, and it is what decides whether you are buying eight pages or a hundred.
The two only line up once, at year one, where paper and a record of the first year are the same idea. After that they diverge, and the size question is the one that keeps being useful.
Two structures that work at any year
Chronological. One section per year, or one spread per year. Forces an even distribution and shows the gaps — which is either a feature or a warning, depending on how the years went.
Thematic. Homes, holidays, the people who came and went. Better when the archive is uneven, which after about year five it always is.

When a magazine stops being enough
Not at a particular year — at a particular count. A magazine tops out at 40 pages, about 160 photographs, for ₹1,099. Past that the only thing that holds more is an album.

Which years we have not written a page for
Six, eight, eleven, twelve and thirty-five. Not an oversight — the answer at those years is identical to the year before, and a page that repeats the previous page is worse than no page.

What we check, and what we cannot
Before design starts we check every file against the size it has been placed at and flag anything too small, and we flag a page count that does not fit the photographs you have sent. Both are caught again on the proof you approve.
What we cannot check is whether the years are evenly represented, because only you know that 2014 is missing rather than uneventful. At a milestone that is the difference between a record and a highlight reel.

How many pages should an anniversary book be? Count the photographs you would actually print and divide by four. One or two years fits 8 to 16 pages; a decade needs 40; twenty-five years wants an album.
Is a magazine or an album better for an anniversary? A magazine up to about ten years, an album from twenty-five. Between the two it depends on whether images want a full spread.
What is the traditional gift for each year? That is a separate question with its own guide, including which years are worth following and which are not.
Why is there no page for year eight? Because the answer is the same as year seven. A page that repeats the one before it is padding, not coverage.
How far ahead should I order for a milestone anniversary? Months for a twenty-fifth or fiftieth, because the photographs are spread across houses and formats. The printing is the fast part.
