Three years carry real weight: the 1st, the 25th and the 50th. The rest are a scaffold, and treating year seven as an obligation is how people end up buying copper.
Year one, which is the one the tradition gets right
Paper is first because a first year is thin, new and unproven. That reading makes it useful rather than quaint: year one has the most change in it and the least documentation, because nobody was thinking about documenting it.

The middle years, where the list stops helping
Between about three and twenty, the traditional material rarely suggests anything good. Leather is awkward in many Indian households, copper says nothing, crystal is a vase.
What does work in those years is the archive, which is quietly getting deeper every year while the list gets less useful. Ten years of photographs edited to one spread per year is a better tenth-anniversary gift than anything tin.

The 25th, which is a real occasion in India
Silver jubilees are genuinely observed here in a way most of the intermediate years are not — often with an event, and often with the couple’s children organising it.
That changes the format. Twenty-five years is an archive, not a story, and an archive wants an album rather than a magazine. It is also the one anniversary where a group gift from the family is the normal shape.
