Birthdays and anniversaries arrive on a schedule. Everything on this page does not — a job, an exam result, a house, a diagnosis that turned out fine — and that changes the gifting question completely.
The date is not fixed, the news arrives suddenly, and you often find out through somebody else.
The test that sorts them
Three questions, in order.
1. Is there something to record, or only something to congratulate? A ten-year career has an archive. A promotion announced on Tuesday does not. Anything with years behind it can carry an object; anything that is purely a piece of good news usually wants a message and a dinner.
2. Did they choose to make it public? Some milestones are announced, and some are told to three people. Match what they did. A public gift for a private milestone is not generous, it is exposing.
3. Is the milestone the end of something, or the start? Endings suit printed things, because the material exists. Beginnings suit practical things, because nothing has happened yet.
| Milestone | Something to record? | Usually wants |
|---|---|---|
| A new job | The old one | A small thing, or nothing |
| A promotion | No | Congratulations, and a dinner |
| Clearing UPSC | Two to five years of preparation | Something substantial |
| A first home | No, not yet | Prints for the walls |
| Starting college | School, which is ending | A book of the years before |
| A new baby | Not yet | Something for the parents |
| Recovering from illness | Nothing you should print | Something small and undemanding |
| Launching something | The making of it | A record of the process |
The mistake that runs through all of them
Scaling the gift to the announcement rather than to the work behind it.
A promotion is announced loudly and has almost nothing behind it. Three years of preparation for a competitive exam is announced in one message and has an entire period of somebody’s life behind it. The gifting instinct gets these exactly the wrong way round, because it responds to volume.
The question that fixes it is not “how big is this news” but “how long has this been going on”.
Where the photographs are
Every printed gift on this page depends on an archive, and for milestones the archive is almost never in the obvious place.
| Milestone | Where the material is |
|---|---|
| Leaving a job | Colleagues’ phones. Not theirs |
| Clearing a competitive exam | A WhatsApp group with four people in it |
| Starting college | The school years, in six friends’ camera rolls |
| A new baby | The parents’, and do not ask them this month |
| Launching something | Their own drafts, and a collaborator’s thread |
In four of those five, the person receiving the gift is not the person holding the photographs. That is what makes these gifts possible and it is also why they take three weeks longer than people plan for.
⚠️ Ask for originals rather than forwards. Anything that has been through a group chat has been compressed, and it shows on paper. Where a decade of photographs actually is →

The one that catches people out
We are made to order: 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, and we dispatch every Monday.
Milestones on this page arrive with no notice. That means a made object almost never arrives on the day — which is fine, and often better, because it arrives when the noise has stopped and everybody else has moved on. Ordering for a fixed date →
When the milestone is not yours to mark
Three cases where the right answer is to do nothing, and they come up more than the gifting industry admits.
You found out indirectly. Somebody mentioned it, or you saw it online, and they have not told you. A gift then is an announcement that you know.
They have not decided how they feel about it. A move, a job change, an ending. Marking it assigns it a meaning they may not have settled on.
It is somebody else’s news about them. A parent announcing a child’s result, a partner announcing a promotion. Wait for the person themselves.
Frequently asked
What is a good gift for a big life achievement? It depends whether there is an archive behind it. Years of work can carry a printed object; a single piece of good news usually wants a message and a dinner.
Should a milestone gift be public? Match what they did. If they told three people, do not hand it over in front of thirty.
Is it too late to give something weeks after? No. Almost everything here arrives after the news, and a gift landing once the congratulations have stopped is looked at more closely.
How much should a milestone gift cost? ₹270 to ₹1,100 covers almost everything sensible. Scale it to the years behind the milestone, not to the size of the announcement.
What if I am not sure it is good news? Then treat it as a change rather than an achievement, and go smaller and quieter.
