Gifts for a New Baby

Everybody buys for the baby and nobody buys for the two people who have not slept. What that leaves open, and why the gift should require nothing of them.

Two facts decide everything here.

The baby receives nothing. A newborn has no preferences and will not remember any of it. Every gift at this occasion is actually for the parents, whether or not it is wrapped that way.

The parents have not slept. Which means the single most important property of a gift at this moment is that it requires nothing of them — no choosing, no organising, no thank-you project, no “we should sit down and pick photos”.

What everyone else is giving

Clothes in the newborn size, which the baby is out of in six weeks. Soft toys, of which there will be eleven. That is not a criticism — it is just a description of the gift table, and it is what tells you where the gap is.

What arrives How much of it
Newborn clothes Far too much, and outgrown in weeks
Soft toys Eleven
Practical things Useful, and the parents have bought most of it
Anything for the parents Almost none
Anything printed Effectively none

What to give instead

Clothes two sizes up. Not from us, and reliably the most useful thing anybody gives.

Prints for the nursery, from ₹270 for thirty. A room that has just been made, with bare walls, in a house where nobody has time to decorate it. Print packs →

Food. Not from us either. Genuinely one of the best gifts to a household with a newborn.

A book of the pregnancy, if they took photographs. Rare and very well received, and it is about the parents rather than the baby, which nothing else on the table is. ₹499 for 8 pages.

A promise, with a date on it. “I will make the first-year book in March.” Then do it. The photographs will exist by then and the parents will still have no time. First birthday gift ideas →

What not to do

⚠️ Do not ask them to send you photographs this month. It is the single commonest way a well-meant photo gift becomes a task. A household with a two-week-old cannot curate an album.

If you want to make something from their photographs, wait until month six and ask then.

Do not give something requiring assembly or a decision. Anything with options is a question, and they have no capacity for questions.

What it costs

Option Price
Print pack, 30 ₹270
Laminated print pack ₹360
8-page magazine ₹499
24-page magazine ₹699

Lamination is ₹3 per print and is worth it for a nursery, where things get touched. Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India. Best format for a new baby →

Timing

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, dispatched every Monday.

There is no deadline here. A gift arriving in month two, when the visitors have stopped and the house is quiet and difficult, is better timed than one arriving in the first week with thirty others.

The gift for the second child

Worth its own note, because it is where the gap is widest.

A second baby gets a fraction of the attention the first did, and the parents notice. Fewer visitors, fewer gifts, far fewer photographs — the first child’s first year is documented four times more heavily than the second’s, and every parent of two knows it.

So for a second baby: give more, not less, and specifically give something that includes the older child. The transition is theirs too, and almost nothing at that moment acknowledges it.

Frequently asked

What is a good gift for a new baby? Something for the parents. The baby receives nothing, and the parents are the ones who have not slept.

What do new parents actually need? Food, clothes two sizes up, and gifts that require no decisions from them.

Can I make a photo book for them? Not from photographs you ask them to send this month — that turns a gift into a task. Offer to do it at month six.

When is the best time to give it? Month two. The first week has thirty gifts in it and the house is full of visitors.

Should nursery prints be laminated? Yes, at ₹3 each. Anything at that height gets touched.
