Retirement Gift Ideas, by Who Is Giving

A retirement date is known years ahead, yet most gifts are bought in the week before it. Ten ideas, by whether you are family, a spouse, a friend or the office.

Most milestones in this section arrive at short notice, or on no fixed date. A retirement is the opposite. The date has been known for years — in most government and public-sector jobs it follows a rule written down decades ago, usually the last day of the month in which someone reaches retirement age.

And still, most retirement gifts are bought in the final week. That is how the same few objects keep turning up: a shawl, a bouquet, a memento with two dates on it, a wall clock.

The better gifts are decided by one thing, and it is not the budget. It is who you are to them. A retirement looks very different from the other side of the dinner table than it does from the next desk, and the right gift changes with it.

What the day already brings

Worth knowing before you choose anything, so you do not add a fifth shawl or a second watch.

Who Usually gives So you can skip
The office function A shawl, flowers, a memento, speeches Anything framed, engraved or dated
The department, pooled One larger object — a watch, a trolley bag, a gold coin A second expensive object
Family, on the day A dinner, sweets, relatives calling Another party

The day itself is well covered. The months after it are not. Almost nothing arrives in the second or third week, when the phone has gone quiet and someone else is sitting at the desk. That gap is where most of the ideas below belong.

Ten ideas, by who you are

If you are their son or daughter

1. The career, told by the people who shared it. Colleagues, juniors, the person who joined the same year — each asked for one specific memory, set beside the office photographs nobody ever printed. Colleagues hold the material, but it usually takes family to gather it — and nothing else on this page lands as hard. How to put one together for a parent →

2. The paperwork, sat through with them. Retirement produces a surprising amount of admin: the pension or annuity, the provident fund, gratuity, and health cover, which matters most. A group policy through an employer usually ends with the job, so ask the insurer about moving to a personal policy before it lapses — a new policy at around sixty means medical tests, higher premiums and waiting periods. Government and many public-sector retirees can keep cover through CGHS or their own scheme instead. An afternoon of doing all this together is worth more than most objects.

If you are their husband or wife

This is the relationship gift guides skip, and it is the one where the retirement changes the most — because you are the other person in the house.

3. A day each, as well as days together. For thirty-odd years at least one of you left every morning. Now there are two people at home from breakfast to dinner, and the couples who settle into it well are the ones who each keep somewhere to be. A class with its own people in it, a club, a weekly commitment — chosen by them, paid for by you.

4. The trip that never fitted a leave application. Every holiday of a working life was shaped by a leave form and school terms. A trip on a Tuesday in the off-season, for as long as the two of you like, is a gift only this moment makes possible.

5. A book of the two of you across the working years. Not the career and not the children: the couple, in the decades the job arranged. The transfers, the city postings, the flat near the office, the friends each posting brought. Twenty-four to forty pages is ₹699 to ₹1,099 with us, at about three photographs a page.

If you are a friend, a neighbour or a relative

6. Company on a weekday. Most of the people a new retiree knows are still at work from Monday to Friday. The most useful thing a friend can offer in the first few months is eleven o’clock on a Wednesday — a standing walk, a lunch, a matinee — while they work out what their weeks are going to look like.

7. A start on the plan they have announced. Most people approaching retirement have one sentence they have said for years: when I retire, I am going to learn the harmonium, walk the Narmada, finally sort the family albums. Give towards that sentence — the first term of lessons, the guidebook, the scanner. If there is no such sentence, give the weekday instead.

If you are the office

8. One card per colleague, in a box. From a team, a card deck avoids the seniority problem a book runs into: every colleague gets one card, one photograph and one line, and nobody is on page nine. Twenty-seven cards are ₹999 and fifty-two are ₹1,699. Which format suits a retirement →

9. One formal object, made properly. A long-service gift from an employer is the right place for engraving; the register fits. Make it one well-made thing rather than a plaque, a pen and a clock together. Photo book or engraved gift →

From anyone at all

10. A letter. One page about one thing they did — a decision they took, a crisis they handled, a kindness nobody else saw — with a year and a place in it. It costs nothing, and it is the item retirees keep in the drawer long after the memento has gone to the loft. When a letter beats a photo gift →

⚠️ If one of them ran the home rather than going out to work, mark it for both of them. In a great many Indian homes that spouse has run the household for the whole of the career, and their days are about to change as much as the retiree’s. A gift addressed only to the one who drew the salary says something unkind without meaning to.

Going to a retirement party as a guest

If you are a guest rather than the organiser — a relative, a family friend, someone from the building — the etiquette is simpler than it looks.

  • Bring something small. Sweets and a card are the right scale for a guest. A large individual gift competes with whatever the family has planned.
  • Write one real memory in the card. “Congratulations on your retirement” is what the other thirty cards say.
  • Leave the joke gift at home. The rocking chair, the mug announcing that someone is officially old. Some people find this week hard, and a crowded room is the wrong place to discover which kind of retiree they are.
  • Check with the family before buying as a group. Two groups arriving with the same trolley bag happens more often than anybody admits.

If retirement also means moving back home

A great many Indian careers are spent in cities that were never home: postings, transfers, a job in Mumbai for someone who grew up in a Kerala town and has gone back every summer for thirty years. For a lot of people, retirement is also the move back — to the home town, the family house, the place they always said they would end up.

That is two changes at once, and the second is the one nobody marks. The work friends stay in the city. So do the flat, the evening walk and the vegetable seller who knew their order without asking. A record of the city years goes with them to a place where nobody else remembers any of it, and it is the gift a colleague or a neighbour is best placed to make.

When the retirement was not a choice

Voluntary schemes that were not really voluntary, a restructuring, a health reason — a real share of retirements are not celebrations. Do not throw a party for one of those, and do not send anything with “happy retirement” printed on it.

The date is known, so use it

Unlike nearly every occasion in this section, you can start early — and anything collected from colleagues should. Begin about six weeks out. Chasing twenty people for a photograph and a line is the slow part; the making is quick by comparison.

Frequently asked

What do you give someone who is retiring? It depends on who you are to them. Family can gather the career from the people in it, a spouse can make sure each of them has somewhere to be, a friend can give weekday company, and a team suits one card per colleague.

What is a good retirement gift from a husband or wife? Something that plans for two people being home all day: a day each as well as time together, and the first trip that does not need anyone’s leave approved.

What should a guest bring to a retirement party? Sweets and a card with one specific memory in it. Leave the larger gifts to the family and the office.

Is a retirement gift after the last day too late? No. The weeks after the last day are when almost nothing arrives, which makes a gift then more noticed than one on the day.

What if the retirement was forced? Skip the celebration and anything that says congratulations. A private note and company on a weekday are enough.
