Of everything on this site, this is the milestone with the widest gap between how much work went into it and how little of that work anybody photographed.
Two to five years, usually. A room in Old Rajinder Nagar or Kota or a corner of a family home, a schedule with nothing in it but the exam, friendships formed entirely inside it, and attempts that did not clear.
That is a real archive, and almost nobody thinks to make it into anything.
Why this one is different
| Most exams | A competitive exam |
|---|---|
| Months of preparation | Years |
| One attempt | Often two or three |
| The candidate’s achievement | The household’s, usually |
| Little to record | A period of life |
The second row is the one that changes the gift. Most people who clear have not cleared before, which means the years include failures that are now part of the story rather than separate from it.
What to give
The preparation years, printed. 24 pages at ₹699 or 32 at ₹899 — the room, the desk, the study group, the wall of timetables, the friends who cleared and the ones who did not.
The photographs exist. They are in a WhatsApp group with four people in it and nobody has looked at them since. Where a decade of photographs actually is →
A card deck of the study group. 27 cards at ₹999 — one per person, each with a line. For a cohort that is about to be posted to five different states, this is the object that survives it. Photo Card Deck →
An album, if the family is marking it properly. From ₹1,299. Clearing UPSC is often treated as a family event in the way a wedding is, and an album is the format that suits a room of relatives.
Prints for a new posting, from ₹270. Whoever cleared is about to live somewhere they have never been, in accommodation they did not choose.

Include the attempts that did not clear
The instinct is to make a gift about the successful attempt. It is a much better object if it covers the whole period, including the years that ended badly — those are what made this one mean something, and pretending otherwise makes a thin book.
Ask them first if this is a long book. Some people want the preparation years behind them, and a retrospective is the last thing they want in month one.
For the family
Parents and siblings of someone in long preparation carry a version of it too — the household adjusted around it for years.
A book that includes the family rather than only the candidate is the version that gets kept, and it is rarely what anyone makes.
Timing
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, dispatched every Monday. Results are announced without notice and postings follow quickly, so send it to the family address rather than to wherever they are about to be.
What the book should be structured around
Not the syllabus, and not the attempts. Two structures that work:
By year. One section per year of preparation. Blunt, and it shows the length, which is the thing nobody else acknowledges.
By place. The rooms. A competitive exam is lived in a very small number of physical spaces — a rented room, a library, a corner of a house, one particular tea stall — and those are what the person will not be able to picture in five years.
The second is better if the preparation ran long, because years three and four look identical and rooms do not.
Frequently asked
What do you give someone who cleared UPSC? Something about the preparation years — the room, the study group, the failed attempts. That is the archive nobody thinks to use.
Where would those photographs even be? In a WhatsApp group with three or four people in it. Ask for the originals rather than the forwards.
Should a gift mention the earlier attempts? Usually yes, and it makes a far better object — but ask first. Some people want that period firmly behind them.
Is an album too much? Not if the family is marking it as an event, which is common. An album suits a room of relatives in a way a magazine does not.
Where should it be delivered? The family address. Postings follow the result quickly and nobody knows the new one yet.
