A first book, a first shop, a first exhibition, a first product shipped. The launch gets photographed heavily — there is an event, there are guests, everyone has a phone out.
The two years before it were photographed by nobody.
That asymmetry is the whole opportunity, and it is why this is one of the better occasions for something printed.
What the archive actually is
| Exists | Does not exist |
|---|---|
| The launch, from thirty angles | The first draft |
| The finished object | The rejections |
| Press photographs | The desk at 2am |
| The event | The people who read it first |
The second column is the interesting one and it is almost always recoverable — it is in their own camera roll, in a WhatsApp thread with a collaborator, and in the phones of two or three people who were there for it.
What to give
The making of it. 24 pages at ₹699, 32 at ₹899. Drafts, the workspace, the people, the version that was scrapped. Ask three people who were involved for what they have and you will get more than you expect. Photo magazines →
A card deck for a small team. 27 cards at ₹999 — one per person who worked on it, each with a line. For a first shop or a first product with five or six people behind it, this is the object that goes on the counter. Photo Card Deck →
Prints for the space, from ₹270. A first shop, studio or office has walls and no budget, exactly like a first flat.
Turn up. Not a product. A launch with fifteen people in the room and a launch with forty are different events, and everyone remembers who came.
Give it after, not on the night
⚠️ A launch night is the worst possible moment to hand someone anything. They are working — talking to everybody, being photographed, not eating, and carrying nothing. Anything given is put down somewhere and possibly not recovered.
The week after is when it lands. A launch is followed by a specific and rarely-discussed flatness once the event is over and the messages stop, and something arriving into that is better timed than anything given on the night.
For a business rather than a book
The same logic, with one addition: a record of the first year is a business asset as well as a gift. It gets used on a website, at an anniversary, in a pitch.
If it is a company rather than a person, the bulk and corporate side is a different conversation. Corporate and bulk gifting →

Frequently asked
What do you give someone launching their first book? Something about the making of it rather than the launch. The launch is photographed by everybody; the two years before it by nobody.
Where do those photographs come from? Their own camera roll and the phones of the two or three people who were involved. Ask specifically rather than generally.
Should I give it at the launch? No. They are working, carrying nothing, and anything handed over gets put down. The week after is far better.
What about a first shop or business? The same, and a record of the first year is useful to the business as well as to the person.
How much should it cost? ₹270 to ₹999 covers it. This is an occasion where the thought is doing the work, not the scale.
