Gifts for Passing an Exam

Board results, semester results, a driving test. What to give for the exams that are genuinely hard, and why the score should stay off the gift.

Indian exam season produces a specific kind of gifting, and most of it goes slightly wrong in the same way: the gift ends up being about the number.

Keep the score off it

A gift that references a percentage, a rank or a percentile does three things nobody wants. It makes the gift about the result rather than the person, it dates instantly, and it is unbearable if a sibling or cousin scored differently.

This applies even when the result is excellent. Especially then.

What the exam actually was

The useful distinction is how long the preparation ran, because that decides whether there is anything to record.

Exam Preparation What suits it
A school unit test Weeks Nothing. A dinner
Board exams A year, and a hard one Something small, and specific
A semester or final year Months The year, or the whole degree
A driving test Weeks A joke gift, at ₹270
A competitive exam Years Something substantial — see below

For board results

Class 10 and 12 results land in a household that has been tense for months, and the useful gift is usually about what comes next rather than what just ended.

Prints for a hostel or a new room, from ₹270 for thirty. Most students are about to move, and this is the thing they actually put up. Gifts for starting college →

A short magazine of school, ₹499 for 8 pages or ₹699 for 24. The friendships that are about to scatter, which is the part nobody thinks to record at the time. School farewell gift ideas →

Something they asked for. For a sixteen-year-old this genuinely beats anything we make, and we would rather say so.

For a final-year result

More material, and it is the end of three or four years rather than one.

24 to 32 pages, ₹699 to ₹899 — about 96 to 128 photographs, which is the right size for a degree. Graduation gift ideas in India →

The sibling problem

⚠️ In a house with two children, an exam gift is never received by one person.

If one has done well and one has not, a large visible gift is a scoreboard. The fix is not to withhold it — it is to give it privately and to give the other one something on an unrelated day, soon.

The gift from a teacher or a tutor

Rarely thought about and disproportionately kept.

A teacher who marks a result with something small — even just a written note — produces one of the very few objects from school that people still have at forty. It costs almost nothing and it comes from outside the household, which is what gives it weight.

For a class rather than an individual, a print set works: thirty prints at ₹270 covers the whole group, one each.

Timing

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, dispatched every Monday. Results are announced on a date nobody controls, so anything made will arrive afterwards.

Frequently asked

What is a good gift for passing an exam? Something about the friendships or about what comes next, rather than about the score.

Should the marks be on the gift? No. It dates immediately, it makes the gift about the number, and it is difficult for anyone else in the house who scored differently.

What do you give after board exams? Prints for the room they are moving into, or a short book of the school years. Both point forward rather than back at the result.

Is a gift necessary for a school test? No. Reserve objects for exams with months or years behind them.

What if one sibling did well and the other did not? Give privately, and give the other one something on an unrelated day soon after.
