A signed card is the default and it is genuinely bad: thirty signatures, twenty-eight of which say “all the best”, on something that goes in a drawer within a week. The same thirty people and the same effort, pooled, produce an object that gets kept for a decade.
Farewell gifting is collective by nature. Use that.
The arithmetic that changes everything
| Contributors | Each | Total | What that buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | ₹50 | ₹500 | An 8-page magazine, ₹499 |
| 20 | ₹35 | ₹700 | A 24-page magazine, ₹699 |
| 30 | ₹40 | ₹1,200 | A 40-page magazine, ₹1,099 |
| 30 | ₹45 | ₹1,350 | A lay-flat album, ₹1,299 |
| 15 | ₹20 | ₹300 | 30 polaroid-style prints, ₹270 |

At ₹40 a head — less than lunch — thirty juniors can produce a 40-page record of four years. That is the whole argument, and it works at any group size.
What to make
A magazine with one line each. Every contributor supplies one photograph and one sentence. It is a signed card that someone actually designed, and it is the format that suits a farewell better than anything else.
The four years, in order. First-year photographs through to final year. Juniors often have images seniors do not, especially from events.
A card deck. One moment per card, thirty to fifty of them, boxed. It suits a group relationship made of many small specific things, and it gets handled rather than shelved.
Prints for a hostel wall. Thirty at ₹270. If they are moving into a new city and an empty room, this does more work than a book.

Collecting from thirty people, which is the actual project
The printing is never what runs late. Collection is.
Set a deadline a week before you order. Not the day before. Two people will always miss it, and the design cannot start on a partial set.
Ask for one photograph and one specific line. Not “write something nice” — that produces thirty variations of “all the best”. Ask for one thing that happened. The difference in the finished book is enormous.
Collect in one place. A single chat or folder, not messages to four organisers.
Send originals. Forwarded and screenshotted images are compressed and print soft. Ask people to send from their gallery.

The lines that make it work
The difference between a good farewell book and a hollow one is entirely in what people write.
Weak: “All the best for the future.” · “You will be missed.” · “Stay in touch.”
Strong: “You covered for me in the second-year viva and never mentioned it again.” · “The canteen, every Thursday, for three years.” · “You are the reason I switched electives.”
One specific sentence beats a paragraph of good wishes. Tell contributors this explicitly — most people will write the weak version by default, not by preference.
Timing, and the calendar problem
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR. We dispatch every Monday, so ordering by a Friday rather than over a weekend can save a full week.
Farewell season peaks in May, and it is a fixed date everyone has known for months. Add a week for collecting on top of the printing window: start three weeks out.
Where to go next
This is the overview. Each of these takes one situation and goes deeper.
By occasion Last day of college · School farewell, for classmates · Graduation, sorted by what comes next · Convocation, from parents
At work Office farewells beyond a signed card · A manager leaving the team · A teacher retiring
Running the group gift Collecting messages from thirty people · Splitting the cost fairly
When something else is better
A very short tenure. A senior you have known one semester. A good ordinary gift is honest; a four-year retrospective from someone who was there for four months is not.
When the group cannot agree. If half want a keepsake and half want something practical, the keepsake made half-heartedly is worse than the practical thing chosen properly.
When you have almost no photographs. Some cohorts genuinely do not document much. A print set of what exists beats a padded book.
Under a week to go. Made-to-order will not make it. A card now and the real gift posted later works, and gives them a second occasion after the goodbye.
Frequently asked
What is a good farewell gift for college seniors? A pooled group gift — a photo magazine with one photograph and one line from each contributor. At ₹40 a head from thirty people that reaches a 40-page book.
How much should each person contribute? ₹35 to ₹50 is enough for a proper book at typical group sizes. Twenty people at ₹35 reaches a 24-page magazine at ₹699.
How do I collect from a big group? One chat or folder, a deadline a week before ordering, and ask for one specific memory each rather than “write something nice”.
How far ahead should we start? Three weeks. About a week for collecting and 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep.
What should people write? One concrete thing that happened, not a good wish. “You covered for me in the second-year viva” beats “all the best” by a distance.
