At a convocation the graduate receives things from friends, from relatives and from the institution. All of it is about the four years.
The parents’ gift is the only one that can be about the fifteen before them, and that is the distinction worth building it on.
Friends were there for the degree. You were there for the school changes, the year that went wrong, the subject they nearly failed, the decision about which course, and the bit where they did not want to go at all. Nobody else in that hall has any of it.
What only parents can give
The archive, from before.
Every graduate has photographs of the last four years, on their own phone and their friends’. What they do not have — and cannot get — is the sequence that leads up to it: the first day of school, the years in between, the version of them at eleven.
A record that starts long before college and ends at the convocation is a genuinely different object from anything else they will be given that week.
| Format | Holds | Ours |
|---|---|---|
| Print pack | 30 loose photographs | ₹270 |
| Photo magazine | 32 to 160 images, in order, with words | ₹499 to ₹1,099 |
| Photo diary | A record plus pages they write in | ₹699 to ₹1,299 |
| Hardcover album | The largest format, lay-flat | ₹1,299 to ₹2,299 |
About four photographs fill a page, so childhood through graduation is usually 24 to 40 pages. Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India.
Most of it is on paper in your house, not on a phone — school photographs, birthdays, the albums in a cupboard. How to get old prints into a file is a two-evening job with a phone and no scanner.
⚠️ End it recently, not at eighteen. A book that stops at childhood is nostalgic; one that runs through to now is a record of a person. The last few pages should be them as they currently are.
Write the thing you have not said
The second half, and for most Indian parents the harder one.
Convocations produce a lot of pride and very little of it gets said directly to the person. It gets said to relatives, at the ceremony, in the third person.
One page, specific, addressed to them. Not about the degree — about the year they struggled, the decision they made that you disagreed with and they were right about, the thing you noticed and never mentioned.
That page is the gift. The object is where it lives.
The two defaults to avoid
A watch. They will receive one, possibly two, from relatives. It is the standard convocation gift in India and by the end of the week there is a drawer.
A gold chain or jewellery. In many families this is convention and there is nothing wrong with it — but it is a family convention rather than a gift from you, and it does the institutional job rather than the personal one. If your family does this, do it and do something else.
Also worth skipping: anything engraved with the year, a framed degree (the institution frames it), and career advice in object form.
Match it to what happens next
The practical half of the gift should follow the month after, not the ceremony. Graduation gifts sorted by what comes next covers that — a job starting in weeks, more study here, more study abroad and nothing decided yet are four different situations.
If they are moving abroad, nothing heavy. It all has to be carried and the baggage allowance is already a problem.
When to keep it quiet
When the result was difficult. A backlog cleared late, a degree finished after a gap, a course they did not enjoy. A large celebration can read as relief rather than pride, and they will hear which one it is.
When money is tight at home. They know. An expensive gift at a moment when the family has just finished paying fees is a thing they will feel rather than enjoy.
When nothing is decided yet. Convocation with no job and no plan is an anxious day, not a triumphant one. Mark it small and warmly.
When they have asked for no fuss. Some do, particularly if the ceremony itself is already a large family event.
Timing
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.
If you are digitising old family photographs, allow six weeks overall. The printing is under a fortnight of that; the rest is the cupboard.
Frequently asked
What should parents give at a convocation? Something about the years before the degree. Friends and the institution cover the four years; only parents have the fifteen in front of them.
What is the most common convocation gift in India? A watch, and in many families gold. Both are conventions rather than personal gifts — do them if your family does, and do something else as well.
How many pages for childhood through graduation? About four photographs fill a page, so 24 to 40 pages — roughly 96 to 160 images.
Where are the photographs? On paper in your house rather than on a phone. School pictures and the albums in the cupboard, digitised with a phone camera over two evenings.
What if they have no job lined up? Keep it small and warm. Convocation without a plan is an anxious day and a large celebration lands on exactly that.
