Print packs
Loose photographs, printed small with a border, usually with a caption under each.
What it is genuinely good at: volume and physicality. Thirty images someone can put on a wall in an evening. It is the only format on this list that ends up visible every day.
What it is bad at: sequence and narrative. Loose prints have no order, so nothing you arrange survives the handover.
Choose it when you have a lot of photographs and no story that needs telling in order, or when the budget is under ₹300 and you would rather do one thing well than a book badly.
Photo magazines
Saddle-stitched, editorial layout, roughly four photographs a page with written spreads between them.
Good at: narrative. This is the format where sequence carries meaning — which image opens it, what sits opposite what, which moment gets a full page to itself.
Bad at: longevity of handling. Saddle-stitched binding is not built to be opened weekly for a decade. It is built to be read properly two or three times and then kept.
Choose it when there is a story with a beginning and an end: a relationship, a year, a trip, a friendship.
Photo diaries
A printed record bound with lined pages, so the recipient keeps adding to it.
Good at: being unfinished. Every other format on this list is closed when you hand it over. A diary is the only one the recipient continues.
Bad at: being a gift for someone who does not write. If they will not use the lined half, you have bought an expensive photo book with blank pages in it.
Choose it when the occasion is a beginning rather than a summary — a new job, a move, a first year.
Card decks
A boxed deck of printed cards, one image and one line per card.
Good at: being handled. It is the most tactile format here and the only one that works as an activity rather than an object.
Bad at: holding a long story. Fifty cards is fifty moments, not a narrative.
Choose it when the relationship is made of many small specific things rather than a few big ones — which is most long friendships.
Hardbound lay-flat albums
Heavy covers, thick pages, and a binding that opens completely flat so a photograph can cross the spine without disappearing into it.
Good at: lasting, and scale. This is the format for a wedding, a decade, a life.
Bad at: value for money below about 80 photographs. A thin album is the worst object on this list — all binding, no content.

When a photo gift is the wrong format entirely
When the photographs are low resolution. Screenshots, heavily compressed chat images and old social media downloads print badly at any size. Send originals or choose a smaller format.
When there are fewer than twenty. Not enough for any book. A print pack or a framed single image is the honest answer.
When they are not a photographs person. Some people genuinely are not sentimental about images, and every format here lands flat with them.
When it is due in three days. Made-to-order work takes 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep because a person designs it and you approve a proof first.
