Last Day of College: What to Give Your Friends

The last day is the worst possible day to hand anything over, and the material you need stops being reachable within months. What to do about both.

Two things about the last day that nobody plans around.

It is a terrible day to hand something over. Everyone is in a hall, then a photograph, then crying in a corridor, then someone’s parents are waiting. Nobody has hands free or attention spare, and whatever you give gets carried home in a bag with a certificate and a gown.

The material has a deadline you cannot see. Right now every person in that batch will send you photographs within a day. In six months half those chats are dormant, phones have been replaced, and first year — which almost nobody documented — is gone entirely.

So: collect before, give after. That is the whole strategy and almost nobody follows it.

Collect before

One message, sent while everyone is still on campus:

Making something from the four years. Send me your five best from any year by Sunday. Blurry is fine. Especially first year — nobody has first year.

⚠️ First year is the scarcest and most valuable. Everyone documented final year to death; almost nobody photographed the first six months, which is when everyone looked different and knew nobody. Ask for it explicitly or the book comes out lopsided.

The full collection method covers where the material actually is, including the fest organisers who have four hundred photographs nobody has seen.

Give after

Two to four weeks later, posted to wherever they have gone.

That week is the gap: the group chat has gone quiet, everyone is in a new city starting a job or a course, and nothing has arrived for anyone. A parcel then lands about four times harder than the same object handed over in a corridor.

It also means the thing can be made properly rather than rushed to a date.

Format Holds Ours
Print pack 30 loose photographs ₹270
Photo magazine 32 to 160 images, in order, with words ₹499 to ₹1,099
Card deck 30 to 60 short specifics From ₹999
Photo diary A record plus pages they write in ₹699 to ₹1,299

About four photographs fill a page, so four years is usually 24 to 32 pages. Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India.

Copies are the point. The design is done once, so one book for each of five friends costs each of them one book. That is what makes this affordable for a group with no income yet.

What to give on the actual day

Something with no weight and no ceremony:

  • A letter, in their bag rather than in their hands
  • Loose prints, thirty of them, split between the group
  • Nothing, and a promise with a date on it
  • The thing they always borrowed from you, given properly

A letter in the bag is the best version. They find it that evening, alone, at home, after everyone has gone — which is the hour that actually needs something in it.

What to write in it

The register matters and most people get it wrong by being solemn.

Four years produced a specific set of jokes, disasters and grudges. That is the material. Captions and letters that read like a valedictory speech are about the occasion; ones that reference the viva, the wing, the trip that went wrong and the thing somebody said in second year are about the people.

Specific and slightly rude beats warm and general, between friends of four years.

When it does not need to be a thing

When you will see them next month. Not everyone scatters. If three of you are going to the same city, the object is not urgent and can be better later.

When money is the constraint. Loose prints between two people is a few hundred rupees and it is genuinely the right size for this.

When the friend group is not what it was. Four years shifts things. Make it for the people it is actually for rather than for a batch of two hundred.

When you have two weeks and no material. Collect anyway — that message costs nothing — and make it in August. Nobody minds a good thing arriving late; everybody notices a thin one arriving on time.

Timing

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.

Allow six weeks total if you are gathering from a batch, and start before anyone leaves campus. That deadline is real and it does not move.

Frequently asked

What should I give friends on the last day of college? Something with no weight — a letter in their bag, or loose prints. Save anything real for two to four weeks later, posted.

Why not give it on the day? Nobody has hands or attention free, and it gets carried home in a bag with a gown. Two weeks later the group chat has gone quiet and nothing else is arriving.

When should I collect the photographs? Before anyone leaves campus. In six months half the chats are dormant and first year is unrecoverable.

How many pages for four years? About four photographs fill a page, so 24 to 32 pages — roughly 96 to 128 images.

How do we afford a copy each? The design is done once, so each extra copy is just another copy. Everyone pays for their own.
