Most disappointing personalised gifts fail on the buyer’s side of the process, not the seller’s. Not enough photographs, compressed images, a vague story, a date that was never possible. This is the list of what to have ready before you order — separate from vetting the seller, which is its own job.
Work through it in order. It takes about twenty minutes and it decides most of the outcome.

1 · Count your photographs first
About four fill a page. That single ratio sizes everything.

Count before you choose a page count, not after. A book padded to fill pages reads exactly like a book padded to fill pages, and the padding is always the weakest images.

2 · Find the originals
This is the commonest cause of a disappointing result, and it is entirely avoidable.
WhatsApp, Instagram and most chat apps compress images heavily. A photograph that looks fine on a phone can be visibly soft printed at any size, and there is no software fix for pixels that are not there.
Go to the camera roll, the cloud backup, or the person who took it. If the only copy you have is a forwarded one, choose a smaller print size for that image rather than a bigger one.
3 · Write the specifics down badly
You do not need to write well. You need to be specific.
“Mumbai, second week of June, she was furious about the rain” is more useful to a designer than three polished sentences about how much the friendship means. Concrete nouns carry it: the hostel, the ticket stub, the argument, the nickname nobody else uses.
Five or six of those is enough for a whole book. Nothing generic — a caption that could sit under anyone’s photograph actively cheapens the object.
4 · Check the date is possible
Made-to-order gifts take 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR.
Two weeks is comfortable. One week is possible. Three days is a gift card — and if you tell us the date before ordering we will say whether it fits rather than take the money and hope.

6 · If it is a group gift, collect first
Pooled money buys a much better object than pooled envelopes — but collect the photographs and the money before ordering, not after.
Group orders stall for one reason almost every time: two people have not sent their photographs yet, and the design cannot start on a partial set. Set a deadline a week before you intend to order.
After you order
Send everything at once. A half-sent set stalls the design stage entirely.
Read the proof properly, the day it arrives. You get the whole thing as a PDF on WhatsApp before anything prints. This is the last moment anything can change, and a four-second “looks good” is how “this isn’t what I imagined” happens a fortnight later.
Ask for the changes you actually want. Reordering, swapping an image, rewriting a caption — that is what the proof is for.
When the checklist tells you to stop
Three honest outcomes where the right answer is a different gift.
Fewer than twenty photographs, and no way to get more. Personalisation needs raw material. Buy a good ordinary gift instead.
No specifics you can name. If you cannot write five concrete things about the relationship, the book will be generic with their name on it — which is worse than a well-chosen ordinary gift.
Under five days. Nothing made to order will make it. Buy something off a shelf and give the keepsake later, when it can be good.

How many photos should I send? About four per page. An 8-page magazine takes roughly 32; 40 pages takes about 160. Fewer good photographs beat more mediocre ones.
Why do compressed photos matter so much? Chat apps discard image data permanently. A compressed photograph looks compressed printed on 300 GSM stock, and no amount of processing restores what was thrown away.
What if I am not good at writing the story? Write it badly. Names, places, dates and one thing that went wrong are more useful than polished sentiment, and the designer turns them into captions.
How long should I allow? Two weeks is comfortable, one week is possible. Ordering by Friday rather than over a weekend can save a full week because we dispatch on Mondays.
