The question is almost never what. It is one gift or two, and people get it wrong in both directions — a joint gift where two were expected, or two small ones where a single good one would have been better.
Here is the test, and it takes one question.
The test: whose occasion is it?
If the occasion belongs to both of them, give one gift. A housewarming, an anniversary, a wedding, a festival, a new baby. The occasion is the household, so the gift is the household’s.
If the occasion belongs to one of them, give one gift, to that person. A birthday is not a couple’s occasion. Giving “something for the two of you” on one person’s birthday is the commonest version of this mistake, and it reliably lands as a gift you did not want to think about twice.
That is the whole rule. Everything below is the awkward cases.
When one gift becomes half a gift each
A joint gift fails when it is really a single gift split down the middle — a voucher they have to divide, or something only one of them will use while the other watches.
The check: can they both point at it and call it theirs? A framed thing on a shared wall passes. A set with his-and-hers versions of one object does not; that is two gifts, badly wrapped together.
The asymmetry problem
You almost always know one of them better. You went to college with one; the other you have met at eleven dinners.
A joint gift is the honest solution to that, and also the easy way to dodge it. The difference is whether it contains anything of the person you actually know — a gift chosen so it could be for anybody reads as neutral to both of them.
The version that works: choose it from the friendship you have, and give it to the two of them. Photo gifts for couples
What a joint gift should cost
Not one gift’s budget, and not two.
Somewhere between: more than you would spend on either alone, less than the two added together. A joint gift priced at exactly what you would have spent on one person is the thing people notice, even when nobody says so. Personalised gifts under ₹1,000
When to give nothing to the couple at all
If you are close to one of them and have barely met the other, and the occasion is not a household one, a gift to the couple is a category error. Give it to your friend. Nobody in that house is offended, and a partner is not owed a share of a friendship gift.
Frequently asked
Should I give a couple one gift or two? One if the occasion belongs to both — a housewarming, an anniversary, a wedding. One, to that person, if it is a birthday or anything else belonging to one of them.
How much should a joint gift cost? More than you would spend on one of them, less than the two combined.
Is a joint gift lazy? Only when it contains nothing of the person you actually know. A neutral gift chosen to offend nobody reads as neutral to both.
What if I only really know one of them? Then either give the gift to that person, or choose something from that friendship and give it to the household. Both are honest; a blank couple-gift is not.
The decision, in one table
| The situation | Give | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Housewarming, anniversary, wedding, festival | One gift, to the household | The occasion is shared |
| One person’s birthday | One gift, to that person | The occasion is not shared |
| You know one well, the other barely, shared occasion | One gift, drawn from the friendship you have | Specific and inclusive |
| You know one well, the other barely, personal occasion | Give it to your friend | A partner is not owed a share |
| They have just moved in together | One gift, and not for the house | The household is already complete |
