Five years is the first anniversary where the archive is genuinely useful and the traditional list has stopped being. Wood is the fifth-year material, and unless somebody wants a specific wooden object it suggests nothing at all. What five years does give you is enough material for a real edit — the first year where you can leave things out.

The one that works best at five years
One spread per year.
Five spreads, an obvious shape, and a constraint that forces you to choose the four or five photographs that actually represent each year. That constraint is the entire difference between a book and a pile — and at five years you finally have enough that leaving things out is possible.
It also surfaces the shape of the marriage in a way a chronological dump does not: year one looks nothing like year four, and putting them on facing spreads makes that visible.

What to skip
Wood, as an obligation. If they want a wooden object, buy it. If you are buying a chopping board because a list from 1937 said wood, that is a chopping board with a story nobody asked for.
A comprehensive retrospective. “Everything since the wedding” at five years is a catalogue. The constraint is what makes it a gift.
An album. Tempting at a milestone, and usually wrong here. Five years rarely produces the 80-plus photographs an album needs, and a thin hardbound album is the worst object in this category — all binding, no content.
Jewellery, if it is the fourth time. Not wrong, but by year five the default has started to say I marked the occasion rather than I remember this year.

Where the photographs are, five years in
Deeper than year one and more scattered than you would think.
Old phones hold years one and two, which are frequently missing from current cloud backups. The wedding photographer’s files are usually still recoverable and often better than the compressed copies you have been sharing. Both sets of parents have prints from the early years.
Allow a week for gathering. It is not the three weeks a twenty-fifth needs, but it is longer than the printing.

Include the year that was difficult
Five years is usually enough for there to be one — a job that went wrong, an illness, a stretch where you barely saw each other.
A book that skips it is a highlight reel, and everyone can tell. Including it without commentary — just that year’s photographs in their place — is what makes the object say I was here for all of it rather than here are the good bits.
