A housewarming produces a predictable pile: plants, candles, crockery, something for the kitchen. All useful, all interchangeable, and all about the new place.
The gift nobody brings is about the old one, and it has a deadline that has probably already passed.
The deadline nobody notices
⚠️ Photograph the old place before they leave it. Empty rooms, the kitchen they hated, the balcony, the view from the window, the marks on the wall where furniture was.
Once the keys are handed over, that version stops existing and cannot be recovered by anyone, at any price. It is the single most time-limited archive in this whole category, and almost nobody acts on it.
If they have already moved, ask whether they took any pictures while packing. People usually took a few without thinking about why.
Two different gifts
| About | Contains | Format |
|---|---|---|
| The old place | Empty rooms, the last day, the boxes | 8pp magazine, ₹499 |
| The new place | Bare walls waiting to be filled | Print pack, ₹270 |
The second is the more practical: a new flat has bare walls and nothing to put on them, and thirty prints change a room in ten minutes. It is also the version that gets used immediately rather than opened once. Which format suits a wall →
For a first home specifically
A first flat or first owned house is a genuine milestone and the archive is unusually rich, because people photograph the process — the empty rooms, the paint samples, the day the sofa arrived, the first meal cooked in it.
That is a proper 8 to 16 page book with a clear beginning and end, and it is one of the better small-archive briefs there is. Which format suits a small archive →
For parents moving house
Different weight entirely. If parents are leaving a house the family grew up in, the old place is a shared archive — everyone has photographs taken in those rooms across decades.
That justifies a bigger book, contributed to by the whole family, and it is often the last chance to assemble one. Housewarming gifts for parents →
Timing
Housewarmings are announced late and moves slip. 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR — but the real constraint is the photography, which has to happen before the move rather than after.
If the date is close, give something for the house now and the book when it is ready. It is a better gift a month late than a rushed one on the day.
Frequently asked
What is a good housewarming gift that is not a plant? Something about the place they left. Everyone brings things for the new house; nobody brings the old one.
What should I photograph before they move? Empty rooms, the kitchen, the balcony, the view, the marks on the wall. Once the keys go, that version is gone permanently.
What if they have already moved? Ask whether they photographed anything while packing. Most people did without thinking about why.
What works for a bare new flat? Thirty prints at ₹270. Walls are empty and nothing else at that price changes a room as fast.
What about parents leaving a family home? A bigger book, contributed to by everyone, and often the last chance to make one.
