Moving out is the first time most people gift their parents as an adult rather than as their child, and there is a trap in it.
The gift is not an apology. Leaving for a job, a course or a marriage is the thing you were raised to be able to do, and a gift shaped like sorry-for-going asks them to reassure you at a moment that is already emotional for them.
Give something that acknowledges the house is about to feel different, without treating that as your fault.
What is actually changing
| For you | For them |
|---|---|
| Independence, logistics, a new city | A room that is now empty |
| Everything is new | Everything is the same, minus one |
| Busy immediately | Quiet immediately |
The asymmetry is the whole thing. You will be occupied from day one. They will notice the absence at specific times — dinner, the sound of the door at a particular hour, a Sunday.
A gift that gives those moments something to land on is doing real work.
The three that work
1. A record of you living there. Not a record of you. A record of the house with you in it — the room, the terrace, the kitchen table, the years. It is the specific thing that is ending, and it is the thing nobody photographs because it was always just there.
| Format | Holds | Ours |
|---|---|---|
| Print pack | 30 loose photographs | ₹270 |
| Photo magazine | 32 to 160 images, in order, with words | ₹499 to ₹1,099 |
| Photo diary | A record plus pages they write in | ₹699 to ₹1,299 |
About four photographs fill a page, so 8 to 16 pages is the usual size here. Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India.
⚠️ Photograph the house before you pack it. The empty version is not the one they want, and once your room is a store room you cannot go back and take it. This is a two-day job and it has a hard deadline.
2. Something that fills the specific gap. Be concrete about which moment is going to be worst and aim at it. If it is Sunday lunch, set up the standing video call and make it a fixture, not a promise. If it is the evening walk you did together, find them a replacement for it before you go.
3. Solving the thing you were the one who handled. Almost every household has jobs that quietly became yours — the phone, the internet, the online bookings, the bank app. Write it down, teach it properly, and set up whatever makes it work without you. Deeply unromantic and the most useful item on this page.
The words matter more than usual
Whatever the object is, put something written with it.
This is the one occasion where the sentimental thing is not only allowed but load-bearing, and where a lot of people substitute an object precisely to avoid saying it. The object is not the message. Write the message.
One page is plenty. Specific, not general — what they did, not how you feel about them in the abstract.
If you are moving abroad
Different problem, and it needs planning rather than a gift. Time zones, the first month, who handles what.
We deliver within India only, flat ₹70, so anything printed needs to be made and given before you fly — or made later and carried by whoever visits. Gifts for parents living abroad covers the same constraint in the other direction.
When not to give anything
When the move is contested. If they did not want you to go, or the reason is a marriage or a decision they disagree with, a gift can read as buying the argument off. Have the conversation instead.
When money is tight and you are the one who was earning. A household losing a contributor does not want an expensive object from the person who left.
When you are giving it to feel better. Common at this moment and worth catching in yourself. Guilt-shaped gifts are legible.
When you will be back in a fortnight. Not every move is a departure. If it is twenty minutes away, save it for a real milestone.
Timing
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.
Order about three weeks before you move, and take the photographs of the house before that, while it still looks lived in.
Frequently asked
What should I give my parents when I move out? A record of the house with you in it, something that fills the specific moment they will feel the absence, and a written note. The note is not optional.
Should the gift be an apology for leaving? No. Leaving is what they raised you to be able to do. A sorry-shaped gift asks them to reassure you at a moment that is already hard for them.
When should I photograph the house? Before you pack. Once the room is a store room the version they want no longer exists, and it cannot be recreated.
What is the most useful thing I can leave behind? Whatever household job had quietly become yours, written down and set up to work without you.
