Best Format for a Birthday

A birthday comes round every year, which is the constraint nobody plans for. What to give once, what to give annually, and how to avoid repeating yourself.

A birthday has one property no other occasion shares: it happens again in twelve months, and you will be standing here again.

That is the constraint most people ignore, and it is the one that should decide the format.

The repetition problem

Give a large, comprehensive book for a thirtieth and you have used the material. Next year there is a smaller archive and a higher bar, and by year three you are buying a candle.

Two ways out, and they pull in opposite directions.

Go big once, deliberately. Reserve the comprehensive book for a milestone — thirtieth, fiftieth, sixtieth — and give ordinary things in the years between. The book is an event because it is rare.

Go small every year. An 8-page magazine of that year, ₹499, same size every time. It survives repetition because the content is a different year, and after a decade the shelf is the gift. Which format suits a repeat gift →

What the archive actually is

For a birthday it is the year, not the life. That is a smaller and much better-defined subject than people reach for.

A book of “everything about you” has no shape. A book of the last twelve months has a beginning, an end, and things in it the person has already half-forgotten — which is what makes it land.

Birthday Subject Size
Ordinary The year 8pp, ₹499
Milestone (30, 40, 50) The decade, one spread per year 24–40pp, ₹699–1,099
Sixtieth and up The whole life, family-contributed Album, ₹1,299+
First (a child’s) The first year 8–16pp
Eighteenth Childhood, edited 16–24pp

For a milestone specifically

The decade is the strongest brief here, and almost nobody has done it: thirty years of photographs exist, thirty years in order do not, because putting them in order is work nobody has done.

One spread per year turns an unmanageable archive into a structure. It is the single most reliable milestone-birthday book there is. Which format suits a huge archive →

Timing, which birthdays make easy

A birthday is the same date every year and you have known it since you met them. 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, so two weeks is comfortable and there is no excuse for it being tight.

⚠️ The commonest failure here is not lateness — it is starting to gather photographs after ordering rather than before.

When a book is the wrong birthday gift

When they asked for something. They usually have, for a birthday.

When it is a child’s birthday and the gift is for them to play with. A book about a five-year-old is a gift for their parents, and that is fine, but be clear which you are giving.

When you gave one last year and nothing much has happened. A thin year is a thin book. Skip it and go again next year.

Frequently asked

What is the best photo gift for a birthday? For an ordinary birthday, an 8-page magazine of the year. For a milestone, the decade at one spread per year.

Can I give the same thing every birthday? Yes, if it is small and the content is that year. It is the one gift that survives being repeated.

What should go in a milestone birthday book? The decade in order. Thirty years of photographs exist; thirty years sequenced do not, and that is the gift.

How far ahead should I order? Two weeks. The date has not moved since you met them, so gather the photographs first.

Is a photo book right for a child’s birthday? It is usually a gift for the parents. Give it knowing that, and give the child something they can handle.
