Why padding fails so visibly
A book sized for ninety photographs and filled with twenty-five gives itself away immediately: the same afternoon across four spreads, one image repeated at three sizes, whole pages carrying a single small picture floating in white space that was not designed to be empty.
The recipient does not think what a shame there were not more photographs. They think this was stretched. That is a worse outcome than a smaller object.
What to make instead
