Best Format for a New Baby

The instinct is strong and the archive is a fortnight old. Why waiting a year produces a far better object, and what to give in the meantime.

This is the occasion where the instinct is strongest and the material is thinnest. A baby is two weeks old, everybody wants to make something, and there is almost nothing to make it from.

The honest answer is usually: wait.

Why a book now is a book of a fortnight

Two weeks of photographs are largely the same photograph. A sleeping baby, at slightly different angles, in four different blankets. That is not a criticism of new parents — it is what the first fortnight looks like.

Padded into 16 pages it produces exactly the object nobody wants: repetitive, and obviously stretched.

A year produces a book. A fortnight produces a page.

What actually works now

Now Why
A print pack, ₹270 Goes straight onto a nursery wall, which is bare
A diary with the first weeks printed The blank half is the point — they fill it
Nothing made to order Food, sleep and practical help beat objects in month one
A promise, with a date “One book a year, starting next January”

A photo diary is unusually well suited here and it is the exception to the wait-a-year rule: a short printed section of the first weeks, then blank pages for everything that follows. It is a beginning, which is exactly the shape the occasion has. Photo diary against a photo book →

The gift that is actually best

Commit to the yearly book, and start it at one.

An 8-page magazine per year at ₹499, same size each time, beginning at the first birthday. By the time the child is ten it is a shelf — and it is the gift the parents will name years later, because nobody else thought past the first month. Which format suits a repeat gift →

Tell the parents that is what you are doing. The promise is part of the gift.

What new parents actually need in month one

Worth saying because we sell keepsakes: sleep, food, and somebody taking a task away. A keepsake in week two competes with a lasagne and loses.

If you want to give something now, give the practical thing and say the book is coming.

What to photograph while it is happening

Not the baby. Everything around the baby, because that is what disappears without anyone noticing:

The room before it was a nursery. The parents looking wrecked. The hospital bag by the door. The grandparents holding it. The pile of unopened cards. A year later, those are the photographs nobody took and everybody wants. The photographs nobody thinks to take →

Frequently asked

Should I give a photo book for a newborn? Usually not yet. A fortnight of photographs is largely one photograph. A year makes a book.

What should I give instead? Prints for the bare nursery wall at ₹270, a diary with the first weeks printed, or something practical plus a promise of the book.

Why is a diary the exception? Because it is meant to be unfinished. A short printed section and blank pages after it matches what a birth actually is.

When should the first book be made? At the first birthday, then annually. Same size each year — the shelf is the gift.

What should be photographed now? Everything except the baby. The room before it was a nursery, the wrecked parents, the grandparents. Those are the pictures nobody takes.
