Card Decks for Couples

Fifty-two reasons is the most-made version of this gift and the easiest to get wrong. Why you should write evidence rather than reasons, and what fills a deck.

“52 reasons I love you” is the most-made version of this gift, and the most likely to come out as fifty-two rewordings of the same sentence.

The failure is predictable: somebody writes ten good reasons, then twelve adequate ones, then thirty that are variations on you are kind.

The fix is to stop writing reasons

A reason is an abstraction and there are not fifty-two of them. There are about eight, and everybody has roughly the same eight.

What there are fifty-two of is evidence. Not “you are thoughtful” but “you came to the station at 11pm in the rain because I sounded odd on the phone”.

That is the same reason, made specific — and specific ones do not run out, because they are drawn from a life rather than from a vocabulary.

Runs out at ten Does not run out
You are kind The thing you did on the 3rd of March
You make me laugh The joke you will not stop making
You are always there The night you drove to Meerut
You are beautiful How you look asleep on a train

The four categories that fill a deck

Mixing these is what stops fifty-two cards reading as one long card.

Evidence. Specific things that happened. About half the deck.

Ordinary detail. How they hold a cup, what they say in their sleep, the thing they do with their keys. These are the cards people are most surprised by, because nobody expects to be observed that closely.

Complaints, affectionately. A deck with no friction is not believable. Three or four cards that are gentle grievances make the rest land harder.

The future. A handful, at the end. Somewhere you have not been, something you have not done yet.

52 at ₹1,699 if you are doing reasons — the number is the point of the format.

27 at ₹999 for an anniversary or a shorter relationship, and it is the better object at under two years, when a genuine fifty-two is a stretch.

When a deck beats a magazine

A deck has no arc, so it suits a relationship in progress. A magazine tells a story, which implies a shape and an ending — appropriate at an anniversary, less so as a Tuesday gift.

If the photographs genuinely have an order — how you met, then the years, then now — that is a magazine. Love Story Magazine from ₹499 · Album or magazine for an anniversary →

Where the fifty-two come from

The listing is the work, and doing it in one sitting is why decks come out thin. Spread it over a week and use prompts rather than staring at a blank list.

  • Go through your own camera roll by year. Each year yields four or five.
  • Go through the message thread. Screenshots make cards, and the arguments about nothing are among the best of them.
  • Ask what they would say. Not for reasons — for the days they remember. You will find three or four you had forgotten entirely.
  • Write down the annoying ones as they happen for a week before you order.

Fifty-two arrives in about four sessions. It does not arrive in one evening, and one evening is when most of these get written.

Frequently asked

How do I write 52 reasons without repeating myself? Write evidence rather than reasons. There are about eight reasons and fifty-two things that actually happened.

Should every card be sincere? No. Three or four affectionate complaints make the rest believable.

Is 27 enough for a couple? Under about two years, yes, and it is the better object than a padded 52.

What kind of cards surprise people most? Ordinary detail — how they hold a cup, what they do with their keys. Being observed that closely is the effect.

Deck or magazine for an anniversary? A magazine if the photographs have an order. A deck if they do not.
