A card is small and it is looked at alone, which makes it the least forgiving format we print. There is no facing page to carry a weak one and no sequence to give it context.
One image, one line. Both have to work by themselves.
The line is doing most of the work
People assume the photograph is the card and the text is a caption. It is the other way round more often than not — a mediocre photograph with an excellent line is a good card, and a beautiful photograph with “Goa 2019” on it is a postcard.
What makes a line land:
- Specific. “You ate the whole thing and denied it” beats “good times”.
- Something only the two of you know. The card is a private object; write privately.
- Short. A card read in three seconds. Anything longer is a page in the wrong format.
- In your voice. How you actually talk, not how a card is supposed to sound.
The four that fall flat

Lines, before and after
Most weak lines are one edit away from a good one. The edit is nearly always the same: replace the feeling with the thing that caused it.

None of the “after” lines is clever. Each is simply true in a way only one reader will recognise, which is exactly what a card can hold and a greeting card cannot.
The image side
Faces, close. A card is small. A wide landscape with two people at the far end of it reads as nothing at this size.
Bad photographs are fine here, and often better. Blurry, badly lit, taken at 2am — those are the ones that get a reaction, and a card deck is the one format where a technically poor photograph works, because nobody is examining print quality on something they are holding for four seconds.

Photographs that are hard to fit

Old prints are often the best cards in a deck for a long relationship, because they are the ones the recipient has not seen for years. Fading and a colour cast can usually be corrected; a print that was blurred when it was taken stays blurred, which on a card is often fine.
Structure across the deck
A title card first. What this is, and who it is from.
An ending card. Decks with no last card just stop. One card that closes it changes how the whole thing reads.
Vary the register. Fifty-two sincere cards is exhausting to read. The good decks alternate — funny, sincere, factual, funny, sincere.
The two bookend cards are the ones people leave until last and then write in a hurry. A few that work, to adapt rather than copy:

A title card’s photograph is best as the one picture everybody in the deck would recognise; an ending card’s is best as the most recent one, so the deck closes on now.

Writing for a card you cannot see yet
The lines are written before the layout exists, which trips people up. Four things that help:
Read it aloud. A line that is awkward to say is awkward to read, and a card is read in the reader’s head at speaking pace.
Count the words. Between four and fifteen is the band that works. Under four is usually a label; over fifteen starts wrapping and stops being a card.
Write the funny ones first. They are harder, and they are the ones that run out. Sincere cards can be produced at any point; a good joke cannot.
Write in the language you actually talk in. If your messages to each other are in Hinglish, the cards should be too; a line translated into formal English loses the voice that made it worth printing. If you want a line in Hindi script, say so when you send the lines. Either way, read every line on the digital preview before the deck is printed.
