Card Decks for a Long Friendship

Fifteen years of a friendship is not a story with an arc, which is exactly why a book struggles with it and fifty-two unordered cards do not.

A long friendship is the hardest thing to put in a book, and the reason is structural rather than sentimental.

A book needs an arc. A beginning, a middle, a direction. A wedding has one; a decade has one; a friendship of fifteen years does not — it is a pile of unrelated good days with no shape and no ending, which is the best thing about it.

Forced into a chronological book, that becomes a timeline of a relationship, which is not what it feels like from inside.

Why a deck fits it

No order. Which is honest, because there is no order.

No hierarchy. The wedding you were at and the Tuesday you sat in a car park get the same card and the same four seconds. That is the correct weighting for a friendship and it is one a book cannot do.

It gets handled. A deck is picked up, shuffled, read in a different order, and shown to other people. A book of a friendship gets read once, warmly, and shelved. Photo card deck or photo book →

What to put on the cards

Not the highlights. The highlights are the parts you both already tell at parties.

The cards worth having are the ones nobody has ever mentioned since: the shop, the drive, the thing that went wrong, the phase you both went through and stopped talking about, the completely unremarkable afternoon that for some reason neither of you forgot.

Where fifteen years of photographs actually are

The early years of a long friendship are rarely on anyone’s current phone. They are in four other places, and it is worth checking all of them before deciding a year has nothing:

  • Old phones in a drawer. Charge them before you give up on them; the photographs from two handsets ago are often only there. Recovering photographs from an old phone →
  • Printed albums at both of your parents’ houses. School trips, birthdays, the photo studio portrait someone’s father insisted on. Photograph each print flat, in daylight, without flash.
  • Old social media albums. Most platforms offer a way to download what you posted years ago, usually at a better size than a screenshot.
  • The other friends from that time. One message to the old group usually produces the photograph you had forgotten existed, and the story that goes with it.

How much teasing

A friendship deck can carry far more affectionate insult than a couple’s deck, and usually should — a deck of fifty-two sincere cards to a friend of fifteen years reads like a farewell speech.

The limit is not whether they would laugh. It is whether they would show the card to someone else, because a deck gets passed around: to a partner, to a new colleague, to their mother. A roast they would happily hand to a stranger is a good card. One they would slip back into the box is not.

Roughly one sincere card in four is enough, and those land harder for being outnumbered.

When the friendship was really a group

If the fifteen years were a trio or a gang of six rather than two of you, decide early whose deck it is. From you alone, the cards are about the two of you inside the group. From all of you, it becomes one card per memory from each friend, and the collecting works exactly like a group gift. Card decks as a group gift →

When to give it

There does not need to be an occasion, and it is better without one.

A friendship deck given at a wedding is competing with forty gifts and a schedule. Given on an ordinary Thursday, for no reason, it is the only thing that happened that week.

If there is an occasion, the ones that fit are a move, a fortieth, or the point at which one of you is leaving the city. Gifts for a best friend moving to another city →

If the friendship has changed

Not every long friendship is currently close, and a deck is a surprisingly honest format for one that has drifted.

A book about a friendship implies it is finished. A deck does not, because it has no ending — which makes it the safer object when you are not sure where things stand.

Include the gap. A card for the three years you did not speak, said plainly, is a better card than pretending the run was continuous. It is also the one that gets a reaction.

Do not use it to say something you have not said. A deck is not a letter, and fifty-two cards is a lot of pressure to put on someone who was not expecting a conversation.

Frequently asked

Why a card deck rather than a photo book for a friendship? A friendship has no arc, and a book needs one. A deck has no order, which is honest to what the thing actually is.

How many cards for a long friendship? 52 for fifteen or twenty years; 27 if you slow down while listing what would go on them.

What should go on the cards? The unremarkable days rather than the highlights. The highlights are the stories you both already tell.

Should in-jokes be explained? No. The deck is for the two of you, and an explained joke is not one.

Is there a right occasion? It works better without one. An ordinary Thursday beats competing with forty gifts at a wedding.
