The most common reason anyone is given a diary, and the one with the worst completion rate. Both facts are worth taking seriously before ordering.
Why January diaries get abandoned
They are given as a resolution. A diary handed over on the 1st is an instruction to become a person who journals, and it carries the same failure curve as a gym membership — heavy use for three weeks, then a gap, then the gap becomes the reason not to go back.
The gap is what kills it. Not lack of interest. Somebody misses eleven days, and now starting again means acknowledging the eleven days, so they do not.
What raises the odds
Do not date the pages. Undated pages have no gaps in them. This is the single biggest factor and it costs nothing — a diary where 14 March is blank is a failed diary; a diary with no dates printed is just a diary with a page left.

Put last year at the front. Twenty to thirty photographs of the year that just ended. It gives the blank pages a before, and it means the object is already worth having even if nothing is ever written in it.
Write the first entry yourself, dated 1 January. Then it is continued rather than started.

If it is for yourself
Different problem, and worth separating from the gift version. Nobody has to be persuaded to use it, so the only question is whether the object suits how you already work.
Two things decide it. Whether you write in the morning or at night — morning writers fill diaries and night writers abandon them, because the day gets in the way. And whether you have ever finished one before.
Print the year just gone at the front, not the one ahead. A diary that opens on where you actually are is easier to continue than one that opens on an intention.
