The most common reason anyone is given a diary, and the one with the worst completion rate. Both facts are worth taking seriously before ordering.
Why January diaries get abandoned
They are given as a resolution. A diary handed over on the 1st is an instruction to become a person who journals, and it carries the same failure curve as a gym membership — heavy use for three weeks, then a gap, then the gap becomes the reason not to go back.
The gap is what kills it. Not lack of interest. Somebody misses eleven days, and now starting again means acknowledging the eleven days, so they do not.
What raises the odds
Do not date the pages. Undated pages have no gaps in them. This is the single biggest factor and it costs nothing — a diary where 14 March is blank is a failed diary; a diary with no dates printed is just a diary with a page left. Put last year at the front. Ten to fifteen photographs of the year that just ended. It gives the blank pages a before, and it means the object is already worth having even if nothing is ever written in it.
Write the first entry yourself, dated 1 January. Then it is continued rather than started.

If it arrives after the 1st
It happens, and it matters less than it feels like it does, because undated pages carry no record of the lateness.
Date the first entry the day it arrives, not 1 January. “The year starts when this does” reads as a decision rather than an apology.
Do not mention the delay in the first entry. It is the one sentence that would make the lateness permanent.
Keep the front as it is. In the second week of January, photographs of the year just ended still make sense; only the writing starts a few days later.

Which new year
1 January is only one of them, and an undated diary works for any.

The financial-year version is the most overlooked. Someone who counts their year from April will use a diary that starts there far more naturally than one handed over at a party in January.
The front: the year that ended, a month at a time
The ten to fifteen photographs the diary takes have an obvious shape here. One for the cover — them, recently, printed with their name — and one for each month of the year just gone. Twelve plus the cover is thirteen.
It forces choices you would otherwise avoid. The hard month gets a photograph too, which is honest. The month where nothing happened gets its best ordinary picture, which is often the one they are gladdest to see later.
Go through the camera roll a month at a time and take the first photograph that makes you stop, not the best-composed one. For a Diwali or April diary, run the twelve from the last new year of that kind rather than from January.
The alternative that works better for most people
If the person does not already write, a year diary is a large blank obligation. The year-just-ended, printed as a magazine, is the same money and asks nothing:

A household diary for the year
A different shape, and one that avoids the one-writer problem entirely: one diary for the whole family, kept on the dining table.
Anyone can write in it, any day, a line or a page. The children draw in it. A grandparent writes the date and the weather and nothing else, which by December is its own record. The cover carries the family name and last year’s best photograph of all of you.

Different problem, and worth separating from the gift version. Nobody has to be persuaded to use it, so the only question is whether the object suits how you already work.
Two things decide it. Whether you write in the morning or at night — morning writers fill diaries and night writers abandon them, because the day gets in the way. And whether you have ever finished one before.
Print the year just gone at the front, not the one ahead. A diary that opens on where you actually are is easier to continue than one that opens on an intention.
