What it holds that a phone does not

A phone records what things looked like. A diary records what they cost, who was rude, what you ate, the argument about the bus, and the name of the man who fixed the bike. None of that is in a photograph and all of it is gone in six months.

A five-line entry for the road
Travel diaries die when every entry has to be an essay. Suggest a fixed shape instead, on your page at the front, and let the long entries happen by themselves:
- Where I slept. The name of the place, not the city.
- What it cost. The bus, the room, the thali — prices are the detail that dates fastest.
- Who I talked to. One name, one line about them.
- What went wrong. There is always something, and it is the part retold later.
- What I would tell someone coming here next.
Five lines takes four minutes on a platform. On a good day it becomes two pages without anyone deciding it should.
Carrying it well
A diary that lives in a rucksack for a year needs a little help.
- A zip pouch or a plastic sleeve. Monsoon humidity and one leaking water bottle are what ruin travel diaries, far more often than wear.
- A pen that lives with it. Clipped to the cover or tucked in the pouch. A diary without a pen within reach does not get written in on a bus.
- Glue stick, not tape, for tickets. Cheap tape tends to yellow and lift over a year; a glue stick keeps a ticket flat. Stick things in on the back of a page you have already written on, so nothing is lost behind them.
What to print at the front
Where they are leaving from. Home, the people, the room as it is now. That section becomes strange and valuable about four months in, which is roughly when homesickness arrives properly.
Not photographs of the destination. They have not been yet, and pictures of a place taken by somebody else are the least interesting thing you could put in.
Travel inside India counts
A travel year does not have to be abroad. A posting in the north-east, a rural fellowship, a year of backpacking between hostels, a job that means a new city every quarter — each is a travel year, and each suits this diary exactly.
