The useful answer to “where should I buy a photo book?” is a question back: what are you holding when you start? A finished design. A folder of three hundred photographs and a free weekend. The same folder and no weekend. A wedding photographer’s files. A date four days away. Each of those has a different right seller, and most disappointing photo books are the right book bought from the wrong kind of place.
There are seven kinds of place that make photo books in India. We are two of them — a design studio, and since September 2026 a printer for magazines people have designed themselves — so read the rows about us knowing that. Where we are the wrong answer, this page says so.

Start with what you already have

Most people are in the fourth row and shop in the second, because a self-design tool looks cheaper per page. It is cheaper — by the value of the evenings you spend inside it.
The seven places, one at a time
Self-design websites and apps. You upload, drag photographs into templates, choose a cover and press print. Good when you enjoy it and have the time, and the result is exactly as good as your layout. The catch is that there is usually no second pair of eyes: the preview you approve is the one you made, and nobody reads it for the misspelt name.
Automatic-layout services. You upload everything and software places it, sometimes choosing which frames to keep. Very good for a large holiday set you want printed neatly and quickly; weak wherever a photograph matters for a reason the software cannot see. AI photo books and human-designed ones →
Design studios. You send photographs and a story; a person selects, sequences, captions and lays it out, then sends a proof you can change before anything prints. Print-only services. You send a finished file; they check that it will print, and they print it. No design, no proof of a layout, nobody improving it. Photographers, photo labs and print shops. The wedding-album trade: a photographer shoots, a designer (often theirs) lays it out, a lab prints it. The formats are heavy, large and lay-flat, and the album is often priced as part of the shoot. If you had a professional shoot, that album is one route — ask what it includes, and make sure you have the full-resolution files, because with those a studio can also design a magazine or an album from the same photographs. A local lab or print shop is the other thing this row is good for: the one place that can do it today. Walk in with your photographs, walk out with prints and an album to put them in.
Marketplaces. A shop front shared by many sellers, some of whom make photo books and some of whom pass your order to someone who does. Strong on convenience and on protecting your payment; weak at telling you who is actually making the thing. What marketplace sellers do differently →

What actually differs between them
Less than the price range suggests, and not where most people look.
The printing is rarely the whole difference. Paper and process do vary — some labs print on true photographic paper, most books are printed on a press — and a listing should say which. But a book on good paper with a careless layout is still a careless book. Photo paper or a printed page →
Who decides is the difference. Which twenty photographs out of three hundred, in what order, with what words under them. In the first three rows of the table above, that is you or software. In a studio, it is a person whose job it is.
What you see before it prints. A proof of a layout someone else made is a check. A preview of a layout you made yourself is a mirror — useful, but it will not show you what you could not see in the first place.
Who you can reach while it is being made. A self-design tool has a help page. A marketplace has a ticket number. A studio has a person on the other end of a message who has seen your photographs. On an ordinary order that hardly matters; when the date is close and something is unclear, it is the difference you notice first.
What happens when it goes wrong. Every one of these sellers will say “no returns on personalised items”, and every one of them means something different by the rest of the sentence.

Is a self-design app cheaper than a design studio? Per page, usually. Counting your hours, rarely — and the saving disappears if the book needed someone to choose and sequence the photographs and nobody did.
Which kind of seller suits a wedding? If you had a professional shoot, the photographer’s album is one route, and a studio working from the same full-resolution files is another — a magazine for the families, say, alongside the album. Does it matter which city the seller is in? Much less than it used to. What matters is how long the whole process takes, order to doorstep, and whether you can reach a person while it is being made.
Can I buy a photo book in a shop and fill it myself? Yes — an empty album from a stationery or photo shop, and prints from a local lab. It is the fastest route of all, and the one where every choice is yours.
