Best Format for a Wedding

The wedding is the most photographed day of their life, professionally, and already an album. Which is exactly why the gift should not be about the day.

A wedding is the only occasion where the archive problem runs backwards. There are too many photographs, they are professional, and they are already being made into an album by somebody else.

Anything you make about the day is competing with that, and losing.

Give what the photographer did not shoot

The months before. The flat full of boxes, the tasting where the food was bad, the arguing about caterers, the two of them exhausted on a sofa at 1am with a seating plan.

Nobody is commissioned to photograph that, so it exists only on the phones of the people who were around — which is you. It is the one wedding gift that cannot be duplicated by the professional album, and it is consistently the strongest brief in this whole category.

What each giver is best placed to make

You are You have Make
A close friend The run-up, the planning chaos 16–24pp of the year before
The friend group Everyone’s version of the years before A card deck, one card each
A sibling The childhood nobody else has A book about them, not the couple
A parent Decades, and the wedding is a chapter An album, or a book of their life
A colleague or distant guest Not much An envelope. Genuinely.

That last row matters. A personalised object from someone who was not in the story is awkward for everybody, and cash is the correct answer at most Indian weddings. Wedding gift ideas for the couple →

After the wedding, not before

⚠️ The best timing here is counter-intuitive: give it later.

On the day itself the couple receive a large volume of things, none of which they can look at properly, and a book handed over at a reception gets carried to a car by an uncle. Six weeks later, when the professional album has not arrived and the whole thing has gone quiet, is when it lands.

It also removes the deadline entirely, which for a made-to-order object is a real advantage.

If it must be on the day

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, and Indian wedding season compresses courier networks — add a week in December and around the big festival dates.

Deliver to a home address, never the venue. A parcel arriving at a hall during a wedding is a parcel nobody will look after. Ordering for a fixed date →

The album question

A lay-flat album, ₹1,299 to ₹2,299, is the right object for a wedding archive of hundreds of images — but usually as something the couple commissions themselves later, from the professional set, rather than as a gift.

As a gift it risks duplicating what the photographer is already delivering. Ask before spending at that level. Album against photo book against magazine →

Frequently asked

What is the best photo gift for a wedding? A book of the months before the wedding. The day itself is already professionally photographed and being made into an album.

Should I give it at the wedding? Better afterwards. On the day they cannot look at it properly; six weeks later, when it has gone quiet, it lands.

What if I am not close to the couple? An envelope. A personalised object from someone outside the story is awkward for everyone, and cash is the expected answer at most Indian weddings.

Should I make an album of the wedding photos? Usually not as a gift — the photographer is likely delivering one. Ask first.

Where should it be delivered? A home address, never the venue. Made-to-order arrival is a range, and a parcel at a hall during a wedding gets lost.
