At ₹899 you can buy a book where a person chose and sequenced your photographs, or one where your photographs were poured into a fixed grid. The listings look the same, the printing is often from the same press, and the price is frequently identical. The difference is entirely in what happened between you sending the files and the book being printed.

The overlap in that last row is the problem. Price does not tell you which you are buying.
What the extra work buys
Pacing. A template gives every page the same weight. A designed book gives one photograph a full page because it deserves one, then puts six on the next spread because they are a sequence. Reading a book with pacing feels different and most people cannot say why.
Pairing. What sits opposite what. Two photographs on facing pages comment on each other whether or not anybody intended it, and a grid pairs them at random.
Captions with content. “Goa, 2019” against “the morning after the wedding, when nobody could find the car keys.” One is metadata; the other required somebody to ask.
Editing down. The hardest and most valuable part. Cutting a hundred and sixty images to sixty is where a book becomes good, and a template has no view on which sixty.

How to tell before you pay
Four questions. Any seller doing real design work answers all four in one message.
- Does a person choose which photographs go in, or do I?
- Will I see the actual book as a proof, and can I change it?
- Who writes the captions?
- What GSM is the cover and the inners?
The fourth is not about design, but it is the fastest honesty check in the category — someone who buys their own stock answers with numbers instantly.

When a template is the right buy
We hand-design, and this list is real.
When the photographs have no story. A pile of good images from a trip, in order, printed neatly. There is nothing for a designer to know, so you would be paying for a conversation with no content.
When you want it in two days. A design and proofing cycle takes days by definition.
When you enjoy doing it yourself. Plenty of people would rather make the choices than delegate them, and a good template editor is a genuinely nice tool.
When it is a repeat. A yearly family album in a consistent format is better served by consistency than by fresh design each time.
The version that gets sold as designed but is not
Worth naming, because it is common: a template with a human quality check. Somebody looks at the output, fixes anything broken and sends it to print.
That is a useful service and it is not design. Nobody chose which photographs mattered; somebody confirmed the grid was not broken. If a seller describes “our team reviews every book”, ask what the team actually decides.
