Photo Paper and Printed Pages

A photo lab print and a printed book page are made by different processes on different material. Why one looks sharper and the other one is the right choice.

A common and reasonable question: are the pages of a photo book actual photo paper?

No, and the difference is worth understanding, because it explains something people notice and cannot name.

Two different processes

A photo lab print is made on photographic paper — a coated material where the image is formed in a light-sensitive layer or by dye diffusion. It has a distinctive surface, very smooth, and it produces continuous tone.

A printed page is ink applied to paper by a press. The image is built from tiny dots of ink, close enough together that at normal viewing distance you see a photograph.

Both are printing. They are not the same printing.

Why books are not made on photo paper

It does not fold or bind. Photo paper is coated and stiff, and it cracks at a fold. A saddle-stitched magazine of photo paper is not a thing you can make.

Text prints badly on it. A book with captions, dates and names needs a surface that takes crisp small type, and a coated photographic surface does not. Printing text small →

What you actually lose

Very little at reading distance, and this is the honest part: at the distance a book is held, the dots are not visible and the difference is a matter of surface rather than detail.

Where you would see it: a large, smooth gradient — a plain sky, a studio backdrop. Ink dots on paper handle a flat expanse of near-identical colour slightly less smoothly than a photographic surface.

Where you gain: everything about it being a book — bound, sequenced, captioned, shelved, handed to somebody.

When a photo lab print is the right choice

A single image, framed, on a wall. No binding needed, no text, controlled light. That is what photo paper is for and it is better at it.

Very large. A print at poster size.

Frequently asked

Are photo books printed on photo paper? No. They are ink on paper. Photo paper does not fold, does not bind, and takes small text badly.

Does that mean the quality is lower? At reading distance, no. The difference is a surface quality rather than a detail one, and it shows most on large smooth gradients.

Are your prints on photo paper? No. 300 GSM matte card, chosen because prints get handled, taped up and written on.

When should I use a photo lab instead? For a single image, framed, on a wall — especially a large one.

Why does a book page feel different from a photograph? Because it is paper rather than a coated photographic surface. That is a material difference, not a quality one.
