Several of the best-known photo book services are not Indian, and many of them will ship here. The book itself can be excellent. What changes is everything around it: the price you see is not the price you pay, the wait is measured in weeks, the parcel changes hands at the border, and if something goes wrong the seller is several time zones and a very expensive return away.
None of that is a reason not to. It is a reason to price the whole thing before you start designing, because most of these services ask you to build the book first and show you the full cost last — by which point you have spent three evenings on it and are unlikely to walk away.

The costs that are not on the product page
Shipping. Often shown late in the checkout, and international postage on a heavy hardcover can be a large share of the book’s price. Check it before you design, not after.
The conversion charge. Paying in a foreign currency with an Indian card usually carries a foreign exchange markup from your bank — a few percent, with tax on top — at the rate when the charge goes through, not the day you looked. Some sites offer to charge you in rupees at their own rate; compare that rate before accepting it, and know that some banks add a cross-border fee even then.
The charge at the door. A parcel arriving from abroad can attract customs duty and import tax, and the courier usually collects them before handing it over. Whether a particular photo book is charged, and how much, depends on how it is declared and classified, and you cannot know for certain in advance. Some arrive with nothing to pay. Plan for the possibility rather than the best case, and make sure whoever will be at home knows it may be asked for.

Time
Weeks, as a rule. The making, then international shipping, then customs, then a domestic courier for the last leg. Tracking often goes quiet in the middle, at the handover between carriers, and that silence is when most people start writing to support.
For a gift with a date, work backwards from the date with room to spare, and treat any estimate the site gives you as its best case rather than its usual one.

Sizes, paper and language
Sizes. Listings abroad are often in inches, and “letter” size is not A4 — it is slightly wider and shorter. If the book is joining a set you already have, measure the ones on your shelf. How to read a photo book listing →
Paper and binding. The same questions as anywhere: the GSM of the cover and the pages, the finish, and whether it opens flat. A famous name does not answer them for you.
Scripts. If the book carries captions in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali or any other Indian script, check before you design that the tool sets it properly. Joined letters and vowel signs are where fonts fail, and a tool built for Latin letters may not show you the problem until it is printed. Then check the preview letter by letter. When abroad is genuinely the better choice
A specific book you have seen and want exactly. A format, a paper or a cover you cannot find here is a good reason, provided the full cost still makes sense once it is added up.
A project already half-built in their app. Rebuilding it somewhere else will cost more evenings than the shipping costs rupees. Finish it where it is.
The person it is for lives abroad. Then the book is not coming to India at all, and a service in their own country is usually the better answer. We deliver within India only.
If something goes wrong
Photograph it the moment it arrives, before unwrapping any further. That advice holds for every seller, and it matters more here, because a reprint is the only realistic remedy.
Expect a reprint, not a return. Posting a book back across the world usually costs more than the book did.
Keep everything in one thread. Help in another time zone answers overnight, and one message with every photograph in it gets further than three that each carry part of the story.

Before you design a single page
Five checks, each of which takes a minute and any of which can end the plan.
- Does it ship to your PIN code? Some services list India as a destination but do not reach every address in it. Put yours in before you do anything else.
- What is the delivered price? Add a book of the size you want to the basket and go as far as the payment page. That is the first place most sites show the whole figure.
- What date does it give? For a gift, the estimate has to land well before the day, not on it.
- Does the editor handle your script and your photographs? Try one caption and one photograph from your phone before building forty pages around them.
- What does the damage policy say about international orders? Some policies treat them differently, and it is better to know now.
If all five come back clean, the seller abroad is a real option. If two of them do not, the book you want is probably made more easily here.
