Gifts for a Destination Wedding

Every guest is flying with a luggage allowance and the couple is going home with a car full. Two rules that decide what to give, and where to send it.

A destination wedding breaks the two assumptions ordinary wedding gifting runs on: that you can carry the gift, and that the couple can carry it home.

Everything follows from that.

The two rules

Rule one: do not carry it. Every guest is arriving with a weight limit and a bag full of outfits. A gift that travels in your luggage is a gift you resent by the second airport.

Rule two: do not make them carry it either. At the end of a destination wedding the couple is packing a hotel room into a car, usually badly, usually at six in the morning. The gift table is the worst place on earth for anything heavy.

Together these mean: send it, and send it to where they live.

What to give, given that

Constraint What works
You are flying in Nothing carried. Post it to their home address
You want to hand something over A print pack or an envelope — flat and light
It is a big gift Send it to arrive after they are home
You cannot attend at all Send it, and put something handwritten in it

The one that suits this wedding specifically

A destination wedding produces a genuinely different set of photographs — a place, three days, everyone in one hotel. It is the closest a wedding gets to a holiday, and it is worth printing as one.

But the photographs do not exist until after. Which is why the gift that fits this occasion best is the one given weeks later. Gifts after the wedding →

What to send now

A print pack, from ₹270 for thirty — flat, light, and postable to a home address while everyone else is at the venue. Print packs →

A short magazine, ₹499 for 8 pages, of the years before the wedding rather than the wedding itself.

An album, from ₹1,299, if you are close enough to be giving at that level — but send it to arrive the week after they get home. Hardcover albums →

Where to send it

Their home address, not the hotel, and not the venue. Hotels lose parcels for guests who have not checked in, venues have no one whose job it is, and a made-to-order piece arrives across a range of days rather than on a date you choose.

If the couple is moving straight from the wedding to a honeymoon, aim for the week after they are back rather than the week of. Ordering for a fixed date →

If you are the couple, gifting the guests

Welcome hampers are their own problem at a destination wedding, because the same weight argument applies to everyone who has to carry one home. Wedding welcome hampers →

If you cannot attend

Destination weddings produce more of these than any other kind, because a wedding that costs a flight and three days of leave is a wedding some people will miss.

Send something rather than sending an apology. A gift that arrives in the week after, to their home, does the job an envelope on the table would have done and does it better — it is the only one that month.

Put something handwritten in it. This is the whole difference between a gift and a transfer. A message written by you is what stands in for being in the room.

Do not apologise in it. The note should be about them.

The couple’s own parcel problem

If you are the couple rather than a guest, the destination creates a problem at your end too: gifts arrive at a venue in a city you do not live in, at the exact moment you are leaving it.

Three things that help:

  • Tell people where you live. Guests default to the venue because nobody told them otherwise, and most would rather send it to your house.
  • Do not open the gift table into a car. Whatever is loaded at six in the morning is what gets damaged, and the fragile things are always at the bottom.
  • Expect the useful gifts to arrive late. Anything made rather than bought is arriving after you are home, which is the correct time for it.

A note on abroad

We deliver within India, flat ₹70 anywhere. If the wedding is abroad but the couple lives in India, order to their Indian address and let it wait for them — which is also cheaper and simpler than shipping anything internationally. Sending gifts home to India from abroad →

Frequently asked

What do you give at a destination wedding? Something you do not have to carry and they do not have to carry home. Post it to their home address rather than bringing it.

Should I bring a gift to a destination wedding? No. Every guest is at a luggage limit and the couple is packing a hotel room at the end of it.

Where should a destination wedding gift be delivered? The couple’s home address. Hotels and venues both lose parcels for people who are not standing there.

When should it arrive? The week after they are home, especially if there is a honeymoon between the wedding and their return.

Can you deliver outside India? No — we deliver within India only, at a flat ₹70. For a couple who lives in India, ordering to their Indian address is faster and avoids customs entirely.
