Why the watermark
Because the design is the product.
A clean print-ready file is the entire thing you paid for, minus the paper. Handed over, it can be printed anywhere, any number of times, by anyone — and the designer’s work that produced it is the part that cost money.
That is not a suspicion about you specifically. It is that a business selling design and printing cannot also give the design away and expect the printing to fund it.
What the watermark does not stop you doing
Reading it properly. It is legible. Check the spellings.
Reading it large. Open it on a laptop or tablet at full size rather than on a phone, where a whole spread shrinks until a wrong year in a caption slips past you.
Sharing it for approval. If your sibling should see it before it prints, forward it. Can someone else approve it? →
Keeping it. Nobody takes it back.
Why people ask for a file, and what solves it
The request is usually standing in for something more specific, and the specific thing normally has a better answer than a PDF.

If you genuinely want a digital version
Two honest routes.
Say so before design starts. Any digital arrangement alongside the printed piece is a conversation to have at the enquiry stage, when it can be discussed properly, rather than a request after a proof exists.
Photograph the finished book. Sounds glib, but it works. A book photographed on a table shares better than a PDF does, and it shows the object rather than the file.
How to photograph the finished book
If what people want is to see the book, five photographs of the object do the job a PDF never quite does, and they take ten minutes.
Daylight, not a ceiling light. A table near a window in the morning or late afternoon. The matte pages do not throw glare back at the camera, which makes this easier than it would be with gloss.
Shoot spreads from directly above. Open the book as flat as it will go, stand over it and fill the frame with both pages. An angled shot makes a straight page look bent.
Put a hand in one frame. A screen flattens size; a hand holding the book shows what it actually is.
The cover, three favourite spreads and the last page. Five images make a better carousel than forty, and they keep something back for anyone who will hold the real thing.
If the book is a gift, wait until the recipient has opened it before anything goes online. A surprise spoiled by a group-chat forward is not recoverable.

If the reason you want a file is another person wants one, a second printed copy is usually what you actually want. Everything above is about books we design. If you are using the print service — your own PDF, printed as it is — the question does not arise, because the file was yours before we ever saw it. Keep the preview somewhere safe
The watermarked preview is the only digital record of your book’s layout, and it deserves better than being left in a chat.
Save it out of WhatsApp. Chat media disappears when a phone is replaced, storage is cleared or a backup quietly fails. Download the PDF and put it in your email or a cloud folder, named with the occasion and the year.
It is your brief for next time. Seven days after dispatch our copies of your photographs and print files are deleted. If you want the book again in a few years, the preview shows which photograph sat on which page and what every caption said — so a fresh project becomes a matter of resending the originals and pointing at the PDF.
