Why the watermark
Because the design is the product.
A clean print-ready file is the entire thing you paid for, minus the paper. Handed over, it can be printed anywhere, any number of times, by anyone — and the two to four days of a designer’s work that produced it is the part that cost money.
That is not a suspicion about you specifically. It is that a business selling design and printing cannot also give the design away and expect the printing to fund it.
What the watermark does not stop you doing
Reading it properly. It is legible. Check the spellings.
Sharing it for approval. If your sibling should see it before it prints, forward it. Can someone else approve it? →
Keeping it. Nobody takes it back.
If you genuinely want a digital version
Two honest routes.
Say so before design starts. A digital-only or digital-plus-print arrangement is a conversation to have at the enquiry stage, when it can be priced, rather than a request after a proof exists.
Photograph the finished book. Sounds glib; it is what most people actually do. A book photographed on a table shares better than a PDF does, and it shows the object rather than the file.
Order a second copy instead
