Card Deck or Polaroid Pack?

From across a room these are the same gift: small photographs printed on thick card. In the hand they do opposite jobs.

A deck is a set — kept together, and handled. A polaroid pack is a scatter — taken apart, and put up. Nearly every other difference between them follows from that one.

A polaroid can carry a caption too, printed under the image or written on the border by hand. But it is a label rather than the point. The photograph does the work, and a pack of thirty with nothing written on any of them is still a perfectly good pack.

So the first question is the useful one: do you have something to say about each photograph? If yes, that is a deck. If the photographs speak for themselves, it is a pack.

Handled, or displayed

That makes the recipient’s space part of the decision. A hostel room, a first flat, a bare office cubicle — a pack fills it. Someone who travels constantly, or lives out of a suitcase, or shares a room with no wall to call their own — a deck goes with them.

Quantity, and who does the writing

A pack also lets you choose the shape. Prints come square at 3x3 inches, or at 3x2 and 2x3 for landscape and portrait. How each one ages

A deck lives in the dark. Kept in its box between uses, the cards see very little light, and the wear comes from hands instead: after a year of daily shuffling the edges soften, which many owners come to like.

A pack lives in the open. Prints on a sunlit wall fade over the years, corners curl in humid months, and the ones pinned by a doorway get knocked. How much design each one needs

A deck is designed card by card. Every card is laid out around its photograph and its line, and the line has to fit the space, so the writing and the layout are worked out together.

A pack needs far less. Each photograph is cropped to the size you chose and given its border, with a caption underneath if you want one. That is a large part of why a print costs ₹9 and a card costs about four times as much.

Which is cheaper per photograph, a card deck or polaroids? Polaroids, by a distance: ₹9 a print against roughly ₹33 to ₹37 a card. The deck’s price buys the design, the box and a line on every card.

Can you write on polaroid prints? Yes. Add a caption under each image when you order, or write on the border by hand afterwards — plain matte card takes a pen well, but a laminated print will not.

Which one arrives sooner? Usually neither. Both are dispatched on Mondays, so the day you order matters more than which one you choose.

Which is better for long distance? Either, doing different jobs: a pack fills the room they are in, a deck travels with them and suits one card a day.
