The four that work best, and why
A wedding, but the year before it. Everyone has the wedding photographs; the photographer made those. Almost nobody has the six months of arguing about caterers and the flat full of boxes. That is the book nobody else can give them.
A milestone birthday. Thirty years of photographs exist. Thirty years of photographs in order does not, because putting them in order is work nobody has done. This is the strongest case in the whole format.
A sibling. The deepest shared archive most people have and the least used. It also produces the funniest books, because siblings are unsentimental about each other in a way that makes captions land.
A farewell, contributed to by a group. Twenty people supplying one photograph and one line produces a record no individual could assemble. Pooled money buys a better object than pooled envelopes, too.

What to actually put in one
A shape. Something with an ending. A trip that finished, a year that closed, a chapter that changed. The last page only lands if there is one.
A constraint. “A decade” is unmakeable. “A decade, one spread per year” is a book. The constraint is what turns an archive into a sequence, and it is the single most useful thing you can decide before sending anything.
The bad days. A book of only the photographs where everyone looks good is duller than one including the day it rained continuously and nobody spoke at dinner.
Specifics as captions. “Mumbai, second week of June, you were furious about the rain” does work that “cherish these memories” actively undoes. Generic captions announce that nobody knew anything about the picture.
One page that is only text. A written spread between image runs gives the sequence a breath. It is the thing that makes it read like an issue rather than a slideshow.
The three briefs that usually disappoint
Distinct from the list below: these are occasions a magazine suits, asked for in a way that cannot produce a good one.
“Everything, from the beginning.” No constraint, so no shape. It becomes a catalogue, and a catalogue of a ten-year relationship moves people less than twenty well-chosen images from one year of it.
“Just make it nice, you choose.” With no specifics, the captions have nothing to be specific about, and the result is generic with their name on it. Five concrete things — places, dates, a running joke, something that went wrong — carry a whole book.
A six-week-old relationship as a full retrospective. A thin archive padded to 24 pages, and it announces a seriousness that may not be mutual. A print pack is the better call.
Occasions that want a different format
