Album Page Counts and What Each Holds

Twenty pages to a hundred, and roughly four photographs to a page. What each step actually holds, and why 20 pages is the floor rather than a small option.

Albums step in twenties: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 pages. No sizes in between, and 20 is the smallest made.

About four photographs fill a page, which converts a count into a size in one division.

The ladder

Pages Spreads Holds Square A4
20 10 ~80 photos ₹1,299 ₹1,399
40 20 ~160 ₹1,599 ₹1,699
60 30 ~240 ₹1,799 ₹1,899
80 40 ~320 ₹1,999 ₹2,099
100 50 ~400 ₹2,199 ₹2,299

Why 20 pages is the floor

Not an upsell. Below about 20 pages a hardcover book is structurally odd — the cover and binding are thicker than the block of pages inside, so it does not sit or open properly.

If your archive is under 80 photographs, an album is the wrong object, and the honest answer is a magazine at ₹499 to ₹1,099 rather than a thin hardcover. When an album is the wrong choice →

Think in spreads, not pages

An album is designed and read in spreads — the two facing pages you see at once. A 100-page album is fifty spreads, and fifty is the number that matters when you are planning the story.

Fifty spreads for a wedding is roughly: arrivals, preparation, ceremony, portraits, reception, and a closing sequence. Sketching that division first makes the page count obvious.

The count-first rule

Divide your usable photograph count by four, then round down to the nearest step.

⚠️ Rounding up is how albums end up padded, and padding is more visible in an album than in a magazine — the format’s whole promise is that images run large, so filler pages read as empty rather than as restraint.

A full 60-page album beats a stretched 80-page one and costs ₹200 less. How to choose the photographs →

What “usable” means

Not everything in the folder. After removing near-duplicates, anything too small to print at the size it needs, and images that need explaining, most people land at half what they started with.

Do that subtraction before choosing a size, not after.

When to split instead

Above 100 pages there is nowhere to go, and that is deliberate — a single book past that becomes unwieldy to hold and open.

For an archive of 500+, two albums by period beat one enormous one, and it is the same total money.

Frequently asked

How many photos fit in a photo album? About four per page, so roughly 80 at 20 pages and 400 at 100.

What is the smallest album you make? 20 pages. Below that a hardcover does not sit or open properly, and a magazine is the better object.

Should I round up or down on page count? Down. Padding is more visible in an album than in a magazine, because the format promises large images.

What if I have more than 400 photographs? Two albums by period rather than one book past 100 pages, which becomes unwieldy.

Do page counts come in anything other than twenties? No. 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 are the steps.
