Why 20 pages is the floor
Not an upsell. Below about 20 pages a hardcover book is structurally odd — the cover and binding are thicker than the block of pages inside, so it does not sit or open properly.

Think in spreads, not pages
An album is designed and read in spreads — the two facing pages you see at once. A 100-page album is fifty spreads, and fifty is the number that matters when you are planning the story.
Fifty spreads for a wedding is roughly: arrivals, preparation, ceremony, portraits, reception, and a closing sequence. Sketching that division first makes the page count obvious.
The count-first rule
Divide your usable photograph count by four, then round down to the nearest step.
⚠️ Rounding up is how albums end up padded, and padding is more visible in an album than in a magazine — the format’s whole promise is that images run large, so filler pages read as empty rather than as restraint.

When you are just short of a step
The round-down rule bends at one point: when your count sits a few photographs below the next step’s capacity.
150 usable photographs is 37 and a half pages. Forty pages at just under four a page is not padding — nobody can see the difference between 150 and 160 photographs across twenty spreads. Take the 40.
110 usable photographs is 27 pages. Forty pages would leave the equivalent of six or seven spreads with nothing to carry them. Round down to 20 and cut to about 80, or keep looking for thirty more good frames before you order.
A workable line: if you are within about a dozen photographs of the next step’s capacity, take it. Further away than that, round down and cut.
What “about four a page” really means
It is an average across the whole book, not a layout. Almost no page holds exactly four. One way a 40-page album reaches about 160:

The useful consequence: every full spread you ask for costs about seven photographs of room elsewhere, because two pages that would have carried eight now carry one. What “usable” means
Not everything in the folder. After removing near-duplicates, anything too small to print at the size it needs, and images that need explaining, most people land at half what they started with.
Do that subtraction before choosing a size, not after.

The wedding row is worth a second look. Twelve hundred edited frames feels like a 100-page album, and it almost never is: a professional edit is full of near-identical sequences, and the phone photographs from the family are where the variety comes from.
The college row is the opposite trap. Four years sounds too big for 20 pages, but once the screenshots, the blurred night shots and twenty near-copies of the same group selfie are gone, a folder from a group of friends can easily come down to about a hundred. A tight 20-page album of those beats a 40-page one of the same photographs spread thin.
Counting without losing a weekend
On a phone, tap the heart on every keeper as you scroll, then count the favourites. It is faster than moving files and it leaves the originals where they are.
In a shared album, add the keepers and read the count at the top. Useful when several relatives are contributing and nobody can see anyone else’s phone.
For old prints, count the physical photographs in piles before scanning anything. Scanning is the slow part, and there is no point photographing forty prints you are about to leave out.

When to split instead
Above 100 pages there is nowhere to go, and that is deliberate — a single book past that becomes unwieldy to hold and open.
For an archive of 500+, two albums by period beat one enormous one, and the cost is simply two books at their own step prices: two 60-page square albums, together holding about 480 photographs, are ₹1,799 each.
