The full spread is what an album is for. Everything else it does — heavier paper, a rigid cover — a magazine does at a smaller scale. Only lay-flat binding lets a single photograph run across two pages with no gutter swallowing the middle.
Used well, it is the strongest thing in the format. Used on every spread, it is exhausting.
Which images earn one
Wide ones with space in them. A landscape, a venue, a room with people distributed across it. The extra width is doing something.
Images where the edges matter. A group standing in a line, a street, a horizon. Cropping them to a single page removes the content.
One or two moments of scale. The arrival, the first look, the last frame. A spread reads as emphasis, and emphasis works by being rare.

What breaks across the fold
⚠️ A face in the centre of a spread lands on the hinge. Even with lay-flat binding there is a fold, and a face crossing it is the one composition that always looks wrong.
The rule: keep the important thing off the centre line. An image with its subject to one side and space to the other is what a spread wants. A centred portrait is a single-page image, whatever its resolution.
How many a book should have
Roughly one in five spreads, and never two in a row.
A 40-page album is 20 spreads, so four or five full-bleed spreads is about right. The others carry two to six images each, and the variation is what gives the book pace. Layout and spreads →
The resolution requirement is real
A full spread on an A4 album is roughly 16 inches wide, which at 300 pixels per inch wants about 4,800 pixels across.
Modern phone photographs are usually 3,000 to 4,000 wide — enough for most spreads, not always for the largest. A compressed image sent through a messaging app will not carry it at all.
