Two formats, and the difference is not a preference. It decides which of your photographs can run large and which have to be cropped.

Match the shape to the archive
Open the folder and look at the shape of the images rather than the content.

Why square is the default
Because it is the least punishing shape for a mixed archive, and almost every real archive is mixed.
A square page can carry a portrait image at nearly full height or a landscape at nearly full width. Neither is ideal, but neither is badly wasted. An A4 page is unforgiving to vertical images: a portrait photograph can only be as tall as the page, which leaves wide margins on both sides.
When in doubt, square. It is also ₹100 cheaper at every size.
Where A4 clearly wins
A wedding shot professionally. Photographers work landscape most of the time, and A4 across a lay-flat spread gives you a genuinely panoramic image — nearly A3 wide. Designing for the full spread →
Travel and landscape. Mountains, coastlines, wide rooms. These are the images that justify the format.
Anything with text pages. A4 is a natural reading proportion; square is slightly awkward for long passages.

What it does not change
Paper, binding, design, revisions and the proof are identical. Both are lay-flat hardcover with 250 GSM matte inner leaves.
⚠️ The format cannot be changed after design starts, because every spread is laid out to that proportion. Decide it before sending photographs, not at the proof.
