Hostel Memories: How to Turn Four Years Into One Photo Magazine

The photographs are spread across thirty phones and the group chats go quiet in September. How to collect four years before the material disappears.

There is a deadline on this and almost nobody realises it until it has passed.

Right now, everyone in your batch will send you anything you ask for within a day. In six months half those group chats are dormant, people have changed numbers, phones have been replaced, and the person who had all the first-year photographs has a laptop that died.

Four years of material exists in about thirty places and it is at its most reachable in the weeks around leaving.

Collect first, decide later

Do not start by planning the book. Start by getting the material off other people’s phones, because that is the part with an expiry date.

One message, one prompt, one deadline.

Making a book of the four years. Send me your five best from any year by Sunday. Blurry is fine. Especially first year — nobody has first year.

That message gets replies. “Send me your photos” does not.

⚠️ First year is the scarcest and the most valuable. Everyone photographed final year to death; almost nobody has anything from the first six months, which is when everyone looked different and knew nobody. Ask for it specifically.

Where the material actually is

  • Everyone’s phones, for final year — abundant
  • Old phones in drawers at home, for first and second year
  • The batch and wing WhatsApp groups, if anyone still has media saved
  • Whoever ran the fest, the team or the society — event photos nobody else kept
  • Parents’ phones, for the arrival and departure days nobody else photographed

The fest and society organisers are the underrated source. Somebody has 400 photographs of an event everyone remembers and has never shared them.

Structure it by year, not by theme

Four chapters, one per year, is the structure that works and it is worth resisting the urge to be cleverer than that.

The reason is that the four years are visibly different — the rooms, the haircuts, who was in which group, how the photographs were taken. A thematic arrangement destroys exactly the thing that makes the book worth looking at, which is watching a set of people change over four years.

Within each year, keep it loose. Chronology inside a year does not matter much.

What to include that people leave out

The rooms. Empty, messy, as they actually were. Nobody photographs a hostel room on purpose and everybody wants one later.

The building, the corridor, the mess, the gate. The physical place. It is the single most requested thing years later and the least photographed.

The bad photographs. Out of focus, terrible lighting, 3am, somebody asleep. These are the ones people stop on. Technical quality is not what this book is about.

The people who left. Everyone who transferred, dropped out or was around for a year. Books made at the end tend to reflect the final-year friend group and quietly write out everyone else.

The mess food. Genuinely.

Sizing it

Four photographs fill a page, so the arithmetic is straightforward.

Scope Pages Roughly this many photos Ours
One year, or one wing 8 to 16 32 to 64 ₹499 to ₹599
Four years, tight 24 96 ₹699
Four years, generous 32 to 40 128 to 160 ₹899 to ₹1,099

Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India.

Twenty-four to thirty-two pages is right for four years. People aim for forty and pad it. Ninety-six well-chosen photographs is a lot of college.

Making several copies

Most people making this want more than one, and it is the sensible way to do it — the design work is done once and each additional copy is just another copy.

If the group is splitting the cost, running a group gift without it collapsing covers the coordination, which is the hard part rather than the money.

The captions

One line per page, and the register matters. This is a book for people who were there, so the captions can be almost unintelligible to anyone else — that is a feature.

Names, wing numbers, the nickname, the specific incident. Not “great times”. The thing that happened.

When not to make one

When you are trying to make it before convocation. Collecting from thirty people takes a month. A book rushed for a date is a thin book about final year.

When the group is smaller than you think. Four years of friendship groups shift. Be honest about who the book is for, and make it for those people rather than for a batch of two hundred.

When somebody’s situation makes it awkward. Falling-outs, a relationship that ended badly, a person who left under difficult circumstances. Ask before including.

When the material is only final year. Then it is a final-year book, and calling it four years is visible on the page.

Timing

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.

Allow six weeks total, and start collecting before everyone leaves campus. That deadline is real and it does not move.

Frequently asked

How do I collect four years of college photographs? One message with a specific ask and a deadline — five photographs each, by Sunday, first year especially. Vague requests get nothing.

Why is first year the hardest to find? Everyone documented final year heavily and almost nobody photographed the first six months. Ask for it explicitly or the book will be lopsided.

How many pages for four years? About four photographs fill a page, so 24 to 32 pages — roughly 96 to 128 images. Forty is usually padding.

Should it be organised by year or by theme? By year. Watching a group of people visibly change across four years is the point, and a thematic arrangement destroys it.

What do people forget to include? The rooms, the corridor, the mess, and the bad photographs. Also everyone who left before final year and gets quietly written out.
