You see each other most weekends, you message every day, and neither of you has used the word “relationship”. Then February arrives, the shops fill with red, and Valentine’s Day asks the question the two of you have been happily not asking.
The good news is that a gift does not have to answer it. The right Valentine’s gift for a situationship is not a statement about where things are going. It is a small, specific, good-humoured thing that says you pay attention to them, and leaves the labels for another day.
The rule: gift the person, not the relationship
Every gift makes a small claim about the two of you. A book about “us” claims there is an “us” to document. Jewellery claims a future. Something they would have to explain to their family claims you are someone to explain.
In a situationship, keep the claim small and the thought large: specific about them, quiet about the two of you. A gift that shows you remember the song they will not stop playing is more flattering than an expensive one, and it asks nothing of them in return.

First, decide whether you are doing Valentine’s at all
Before choosing a gift, find out whether a gift is expected. The simplest way is to ask, lightly, a week or so before:
Are we doing Valentine’s, or are we too cool for it?
It is a joke and a real question at the same time, and whatever they say tells you the level. If they laugh it off, a plan and a small token is plenty. If they say “obviously we’re doing Valentine’s”, you know a little more effort is welcome.
If asking feels like too much, match the energy of the last few weeks. If you mostly meet for coffee and walks, Valentine’s can be coffee and a walk with something small in your pocket. And if Valentine’s never comes up at all, a relaxed evening on the fifteenth is just as good, and a good deal cheaper.
Four levels, and where each one lands
| Level | What it looks like | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| A plan, no gift | Dinner, a film, a walk somewhere you have not been | Relaxed and confident |
| A small token | Their favourite snack, a single flower, a photograph of a joke you share | Thoughtful, no pressure |
| Something made for them | A set of prints of their own photographs, captioned | Attentive — you notice what they love |
| Too much, for now | A photo book of the two of you, jewellery, anything with “forever” | A question they did not ask to answer |
Most situationships sit happily at the second or third level. The fourth is not wrong forever; it is simply early. If you cannot choose between two levels, take the lower one and add a plan — a plan can always grow into more on the day.
Gift ideas that fit the stage
Something about them, not about you two
Photographs are the easiest way to be personal without being intense — as long as they are their photographs. The trek they keep talking about, their dog, the city they grew up in, the food they post every weekend. Printed as polaroid-style prints with a short caption on each, thirty prints are ₹270, and none of them says anything about the relationship.
One shared joke, printed
If there is one moment the two of you still laugh about — the wrong train, the terrible karaoke, the waiter who called you “the couple” — a single photograph of it slipped into a card is a gift and a wink at the same time. If you are ordering prints of their photographs anyway, make it one of the thirty. Keep it to one. Twenty photographs of the two of you starts to look like a scrapbook.
A plan with a small object attached
A ticket to a stand-up show, a reservation at the place they mentioned, a morning at a flea market. Attach something tiny — a print, a handwritten card, their favourite chocolate — so there is something to hold. A plan is the most natural gift at this stage, because it is about spending time together rather than defining it.
Their Valentine week days, lightly
If they enjoy the week of days before the fourteenth, join in with the easy ones — a single rose on Rose Day (orange, if red says too much), a chocolate they actually like on Chocolate Day — and skip the ones that ask for a promise.

Getting their photographs quietly
Prints of their own photographs only work as a surprise if you can get the photographs without asking for them. A few ways:
- Use what they have already sent you. The trek photo, the dog, the plate of momos they were proud of. Photographs sent in a chat are compressed, and it shows on a print, so use them to choose, then get the originals.
- Ask for one, casually, as a document. “Send me that sunset photo as a document, I want it as my wallpaper” gets you a full-quality file and gives nothing away.
- Stick to what they chose to share with you. Photographs they posted for everyone are fine; anything that looks like it came from scrolling back through years of their profile is not the impression you want to make.

What to write in the card
Short, warm and a little funny. The card is where a situationship gift most often tips into too much, because a blank card invites a paragraph. Three lines that work:
Happy Valentine’s Day. I remembered the momos.
No pressure, no speeches — just a good excuse to see you. Happy fourteenth.
For the person who still owes me a rematch at karaoke.
Sign it with your name. “Love” and “yours” can wait until one of you says them out loud.
What to avoid
- Anything with “us” on it. Couple mugs, matching anything, a book titled with both your names.
- A gift far bigger than theirs is likely to be. It leaves them choosing between matching it and being seen not to.
- Anything they would have to hide or explain — at home, at work, or to friends who do not know about you yet.
- Serious words in a light card. Keep the card funny and warm. A long paragraph about feelings belongs to a conversation, not to a Valentine’s card.
If they give you something different
If they turn up with more than you did, say thank you properly and enjoy it; you do not need to rush out and match it. If they give you nothing and you gave something small, that is fine too — small was the point. Either way, the gift has done its job if you both enjoyed the day.
Timing
Anything printed or made to order needs time. Our pieces go out on Mondays: an order placed by Friday is dispatched the coming Monday, provided you approve the preview when it arrives, and delivery is 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep. For the fourteenth, order by late January — or choose a plan, which only needs a booking. Have it delivered to you rather than to their home.

If it becomes official later
Keep the photographs. If the situationship turns into a relationship, the prints from this February, the ticket from the stand-up show and the photograph of the terrible karaoke are the first pages of a book you may want to make one day.

Frequently asked
Should you give a situationship a Valentine’s gift? A small one, or a plan, usually works well. Ask lightly beforehand whether you are doing Valentine’s, or match the effort of the last few weeks.
What is a good Valentine’s gift for someone you are not officially dating? Something specific to them rather than to the two of you: prints of their own photographs, their favourite snack, or a plan with a small object attached.
Is a photo gift too much for a situationship? A book of the two of you usually is. Photos of their own trips, pets and favourite places are not — they show attention without defining anything.
How much should I spend on a situationship Valentine’s gift? Little. The thought matters far more than the price, and a gift much bigger than theirs creates pressure neither of you wants.
