Early on, a gift is not only a gift. It is also a statement about how serious you think this is, and if the two of you have not yet agreed on that, the object answers a question she has not been asked.
That is the whole problem, and it is not about spending too much. A ₹400 gift can be too personal and a ₹4,000 one can be perfectly safe.
Where the line sits
| Together | Safe | Risky | Too much |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weeks | Something she mentioned wanting | Anything referencing “us” | Anything referencing the future |
| 2–3 months | A shared reference, a first trip | A large object she has to keep | Jewellery, a key, a plan |
| 6 months | A record of the time so far | Something for her family | Anything requiring a decision |
| A year+ | Almost anything | — | — |
The axis is not price, it is claim. A gift makes a claim about the relationship, and the claim has to be one you have both already made out loud. A book about your first six months is fine at six months and startling at six weeks, at the same cost, because at six weeks it asserts something that has not been established.
The two failure modes
Too personal, too early. It puts her in the position of having to match it or visibly not match it, which is not a nice thing to hand somebody. She will be gracious about it and the gift will still have done that.
So neutral it is a non-answer. A gift voucher or a generic hamper at four months reads as a decision to not decide. This is the commoner mistake and the safer-feeling one, which is exactly why people make it.
The target is in between: specific about her, quiet about the relationship.
What that looks like in practice
Something that proves you were listening, without asserting anything about the future.
- The book she mentioned once, months ago, that you remembered
- The thing from her hometown she cannot get where she lives now
- A skill or a class she said she wanted to try
- The problem she keeps postponing, quietly handled
- Something for the hobby she has, chosen from what she said rather than from a list
- Thirty photographs from the one trip you have both taken, printed — ₹270
That last one is the earliest point on this page where a made object is safe, and it is safe because a print pack does not declare anything. Loose prints of a trip you both went on are a record of a fact, not a statement about a future.
When a made-to-order gift becomes right
Roughly when there is enough material that the gift is describing something rather than predicting it.
| What exists | What works |
|---|---|
| A handful of photographs | A print pack, ₹270 |
| One trip, some in-jokes | An 8-page record of it, ₹499 |
| Six months, a real archive | 16 pages, ₹599 |
| A year | 16–24 pages, ₹599–699 |
| Several years | An album, ₹1,299–2,299 |
About four photographs fill a page. Flat ₹70 delivery to every pin code in India.
Do not go above your material. A forty-page book built from eleven photographs is padded, and padding is visible — which at an early stage reads as trying too hard, the exact thing you are trying to avoid.

Three questions that settle most cases
Would this be strange if she gave it to me? If yes, it is too early.
Does it require a response? A gift she has to react to correctly is a small performance you have asked for. Early on, avoid it.
Does it assume the future? Anything implying next year, moving in, or meeting family is asserting a timeline. Fine when the timeline has been discussed, heavy when it has not.
When to give nothing at all
Genuinely an option, and often the right one.
In the first few weeks, unless there is an occasion. A gift with no occasion at three weeks is itself a statement.
When she has said she does not want anything. Take it at face value at this stage.
When you are trying to fix something. A gift arriving after an argument is doing different work and it does not do it well.
Timing, if you do order something
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. We dispatch once a week on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval, and order roughly three weeks ahead of a dated occasion.
Frequently asked
What should I give a girlfriend I just started dating? Something specific about her but quiet about the relationship — the book she mentioned, the thing from her hometown, the class she wanted to try. Avoid anything asserting a future.
Is a personalised gift too much early on? It depends on what it claims. A print pack of a trip you both took is a record of a fact and is fine; a book about “us” at six weeks asserts something that has not been established.
How much should I spend on a new girlfriend? Price is the wrong axis. A ₹400 gift can be too personal and a ₹4,000 one perfectly safe — what matters is the claim the gift makes.
Is it bad to give nothing? No. In the first few weeks, a gift with no occasion is itself a statement, and not giving one is a normal and safe choice.
When does a photo book become appropriate? When there is enough material that it describes something rather than predicting it — usually around six months, and comfortably at a year.
