Many Indian wedding photography packages include an album. So before commissioning another one, the honest question is what a second album would contain that the first does not.
Sometimes the answer is nothing, and we would rather say so.
What the photographer’s album is
Their coverage, their edit, their sequence — usually the day itself, from preparation to reception, in chronological order and at high production value.
It is comprehensive about one day, and it is already paid for.
The three genuine reasons for a second
1. Everything that is not the day. The run-up, the planning, the flat full of boxes, the tasting where the food was bad. No photographer was there for any of it, and it exists only on the phones of people who were around.

2. Guest photographs. Two hundred people photographed the day from angles the photographer could not occupy, and those images are in a WhatsApp group that will be dead within a year.

⚠️ Wait for the photographer’s album before commissioning another. People order a second one during the wait, then discover the first covers what they wanted. The wait is frustrating; it is not a reason to spend again.
The rights question
Worth knowing: the photographer usually holds copyright in their images, and what you can do with the files depends on your contract with them.
Many wedding contracts grant personal-use rights that cover printing your own album, but it is a question to ask them rather than to assume. Your own photographs are yours without ambiguity. Guest photographs belong to whoever took them; they were shared to be enjoyed, and asking before you print someone’s best shots costs nothing.

If the package album is coming, make the run-up book instead. 20 to 40 pages of the months before, which nobody else has and nobody else can make.

Building the run-up book
The months before an Indian wedding are dense with events nobody hired a photographer for, and they sort naturally into chapters:

When to make it
The advice to wait for the photographer’s album applies to a second book of the day. The run-up book shares no photographs with it, so it does not need to wait — it can be made as soon as the files are gathered, which may well be before the studio delivers.
That opens a good use for it: the first anniversary. A book of the months before the wedding, handed over a year after it, lands at the moment the couple is most inclined to look back — and a first anniversary is traditionally paper, which a printed album honestly is.

Collecting guest photographs before the group goes quiet
Guest photographs are the most perishable material a wedding produces. They sit in a WhatsApp group that is busy for a week and silent after a month, compressed and scattered.
Ask within the first week, while everyone is still looking at the group. One message: “Please send your favourite photographs from the wedding as documents, not as photos, to this number.” Name one person to receive them.
Offer a shared album as the alternative. Some relatives will never manage the document option on WhatsApp but will add photographs to a shared album if someone sends them the link.
Expect small files. Anything forwarded in the group has been compressed. The original on the guest’s own phone is what you want, and it is worth asking the two or three people whose photographs are genuinely good to send those directly.
Credit them in the book. A line on the last page — “Photographs also by the Malhotra cousins and everyone in the family group” — costs nothing, and it makes the same people readier to send photographs the next time the family wants a book. How to send photos without losing quality →
Questions to ask the photographer
Before deciding anything, it is worth one message to the studio. Five questions cover it:
- When will the album and the edited files be delivered? Everything else waits on this.
- Are the full-resolution edited files included, or only the album?
- What does the contract allow us to do with them — print our own book for personal use, share them, post them?
- Do you require a credit if your photographs appear in another book?
- What does an extra copy of the package album cost?
Ask by message rather than on a call, so the answers are in writing when you need them. They decide whether a second book should use the studio’s photographs at all, or be built entirely from the run-up and the guests.
If you do use their files in your own book
Send the full-resolution files from their delivery link, not screenshots, downloads from a social media post or photographs of the photographer’s album. Those lose most of their detail, and a professional image printed soft is a waste of a professional image.

Do I need a second wedding album? Only if it contains something the photographer’s does not — the run-up, guest photographs, or a copy for another household.
Should I order before the photographer’s album arrives? No. Wait and see what it covers. People order during the wait and then find it duplicated. The exception is a book of the run-up, which shares nothing with it.
Can I print the photographer’s photos myself? Usually yes for personal use, but copyright normally stays with them. Ask rather than assume.
