Most delivery advice assumes a house with a door and somebody behind it. A hostel has a gate, a register, a warden and four hundred people who did not order anything, and a parcel has to get past all of that before it reaches a room.
It works reliably. It just needs three fields that most orders leave blank.
What a hostel address actually needs
- The name on the hostel register, which is often the full legal name rather than the one you use. Parcels are matched against that list, not against a nickname.
- Room number and block. “Boys Hostel 3, Room 214” does more work than any amount of street detail.
- Their phone number, not yours. The courier calls the number on the order, and a number in another city cannot walk to a gate.
- The institution’s name in full, not an abbreviation. Couriers route on the recognised name of the campus.
- A landmark, because campus gates are frequently not where a map puts them.
The gate problem
Plenty of hostels will not let a courier past the gate, and some will not let one onto campus at all. What actually happens is that the delivery rider stops at the entrance and phones — so the delivery succeeds or fails on whether the recipient can get down there within a few minutes.
That has one consequence worth planning around: a hostel delivery is a scheduled event, not a passive one. If it is a surprise, somebody still has to be told something. The usual move is to say a parcel is coming without saying what it is.
The calendar problem, which is the real one
This is the failure specific to hostels, and it matters more than everything else on this page.
Semester dates empty the building. A parcel arriving on the Friday everybody leaves for the winter break sits in a locked hostel office for three weeks, and a birthday gift is not improved by being collected in January.

Name collisions
On a campus of a few thousand there will be several people sharing a first name and often a surname too. The register entry, the block and the room number are what tell them apart. A parcel carrying only a first name goes wherever the office guesses.
What travels well to a hostel
Print packs and card decks are the natural fit. They need no shelf, they survive a room change, and they go onto a wall that is theirs for nine months and come off it again without damage.

Will a courier come inside a hostel campus? Sometimes. More often they reach the gate and phone, which is why the number on the order has to belong to whoever is collecting.
What address format works for a paying-guest accommodation? The registered name of the PG, the house or plot number, the room, and a landmark. These addresses are frequently unmapped, so the landmark carries more weight than usual.

Should I warn them that something is coming? For a hostel, yes. Collection happens at a gate at a time nobody chose, and a surprise nobody is there to receive stops being one.
