Almost every disappointing personalised gift fails for one of seven reasons, and six of them happen before the order is placed. We see all seven, most weeks. Here they are in rough order of how often they cost someone the occasion they were buying for.
The seven, ranked
| # | Mistake | When it happens | Fixable after? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sending compressed photographs | Before ordering | No |
| 2 | Approving the proof in four seconds | Mid-process | No |
| 3 | Ordering too late for the date | Before ordering | No |
| 4 | Padding a page count | Before ordering | Yes, at proof |
| 5 | Writing generic captions | Before ordering | Yes, at proof |
| 6 | Personalising for the wrong person | Before ordering | No |
| 7 | Ordering at the weekend | Before ordering | No |
1 · Sending compressed photographs
The commonest and the least recoverable.
WhatsApp, Instagram and most chat apps throw away image data permanently. A photograph that looks perfect on a phone can be visibly soft printed on 300 GSM stock, and nothing restores pixels that were discarded.
The fix: go to the camera roll or the cloud backup, not the chat. If the only copy you have has been forwarded, use it small rather than as a full-page image.
2 · Approving the proof in four seconds
You get the whole thing as a PDF before anything prints. That is the last moment anything can change — and custom goods cannot be resold, so a mistake past that point is a reprint and another fortnight, not an exchange.
“Looks good” typed without opening it properly is how “this isn’t what I imagined” happens two weeks later.
The fix: read every page. Ask for the reorder, the swap, the rewritten caption. That is what the stage is for, and asking costs nothing.
3 · Ordering too late for the date
Made-to-order work takes 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR. Two weeks is comfortable, one week is possible, three days is a gift card.
The fix: tell us the date before you order. We will say whether it fits. We lose orders to that answer every month and it remains the right one — a rushed keepsake is worse than an honestly chosen ordinary gift.

4 · Padding a page count
Choosing 40 pages with 60 photographs. About four fill a page, so 40 pages wants around 160 — and the gap gets filled with the weakest images you have.
A well-made 16-page book beats a padded 40-page one at every price. The padding is always visible, because it is always the photographs you nearly did not send.
The fix: count first, choose the page count second.
5 · Writing generic captions
“Cherish these beautiful memories forever” actively cheapens a page. It announces that nobody knew anything specific about the picture.
The fix: specifics, written badly. “Mumbai, second week of June, you were furious about the rain.” Names, places, dates, the thing that went wrong. Five or six of those carry a whole book.

6 · Personalising for the wrong person
Two versions of this, and both are common.
Not enough shared history. A colleague, a new partner, someone you have known six months. Personalisation runs on archive; without one you produce something generic with a name on it, which is worse than a good ordinary gift.
They told you what they wanted. Reinterpreting a stated wish as a photo book is a gift for you, not them. This one stings because the effort is real and misdirected.
The fix: the honest test — could you write five specific things about the relationship without thinking hard? If not, buy something else.
7 · Ordering at the weekend
The cheapest mistake to fix and nobody knows about it.
We dispatch every Monday. An order placed on a Friday makes that week’s dispatch; the same order on a Saturday waits for the following Monday. Same money, same product, seven days apart.
The fix: order Thursday or Friday.
The mistake we make
For balance, ours: taking an order for a date that was always tight. It is tempting to say yes and try, and when it does not land we have converted an occasion into a disappointment plus a refund conversation.
We now say no more often than we used to, on WhatsApp, before payment. It costs us orders and it is the correct trade.
Frequently asked
What is the most common problem with personalised gifts? Low-resolution photographs. Chat apps compress heavily and the data is gone permanently, so it cannot be fixed at the design stage or the printing stage.
Can I change the design after approving the proof? Not once it has printed. Custom items cannot be resold, so a change after approval means a reprint and another delivery cycle. The proof stage is where changes are free.
How many photos is too few for a photo book? Under about 32 for an 8-page magazine. Below twenty photographs overall, a print pack is the honest format rather than a book.
What if the gift arrives damaged or misprinted? Photograph it immediately and send the images. If the fault is ours — printing, binding, transit damage — it is a free reprint. Our returns page says so plainly.
Is it worth ordering if I only have a week? Possible but tight, and much better if you order early in the week and reply to the proof the same day. Under five days, buy something off a shelf instead.
