The first Valentine’s with someone is not a shopping problem. It is a calibration problem — the gift is going to be read as a statement about how serious you are, and you are guessing at how serious she thinks it is.
Get the size wrong in either direction and the object itself barely matters.
The two ways this goes wrong
Overdoing it is the famous one. A large, expensive or heavily personalised gift six weeks into a relationship does not read as generous. It reads as intense, and it puts her in the position of either matching it or explaining why she did not.
Underdoing it is more common and less discussed. Nothing at all, on a date she has been aware of for a fortnight, reads as indifference — even if what you felt was uncertainty about the first problem.
The gap between the two is wide. You do not have to be precise, only inside it.
Read the stage first
| How long | What Valentine’s is | What fits |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks | An early date with a name | Something small, low-stakes, shared |
| A few months | The first real occasion | A modest object, plus a plan |
| Close to a year | An established relationship | Something considered |
The mistake is gifting the relationship you hope to have. Gift the one you are in. There are plenty of dates ahead to grow into.
If you have been together weeks rather than months, gifts for a new girlfriend covers that calibration in more detail — it is the harder end of this.
What works in the first year
The reliable shape is modest object plus real plan. The plan carries the occasion and the object stays small enough not to make a declaration.
- Something she mentioned wanting, remembered from a conversation
- One good thing rather than several small ones in a hamper
- A letter, if you write well, which costs nothing and is never too much
- A plan you actually organised, rather than a restaurant booked at 6pm that day
What to avoid: jewellery, anything engraved with both names, anything that assumes next year, and — genuinely — a soft toy holding a heart, unless you know she wants one.
If you want to give something printed
A printed keepsake is a good first-Valentine’s gift only if you have the material for it. Six weeks of photographs is not a book, and a thin one is visibly thin.
| Format | Suits | Ours |
|---|---|---|
| Print pack | A few months in, 30 loose images | ₹270 |
| Photo magazine | Close to a year, in sequence, with words | ₹499 to ₹1,099 |
About four photographs fill a page, so an 8-page magazine wants around 32 images. Under a few months, the print pack is the right size of gesture — it is loose photographs, not a bound record of a relationship that is still forming.

Do not compete with the week
Valentine’s week has seven named days attached to it. You are not obliged to observe any of the others, and observing all of them in a new relationship is itself a form of overdoing it.
If you want the map of what each day is, the Valentine’s week guide has it. Pick one.
When not to give anything
When you have not discussed whether you are marking it. One line — “are we doing Valentine’s?” — removes the guessing problem entirely. People treat that as unromantic. It is not; showing up with a gift she did not want is worse.
When she has said she does not like Valentine’s. Some people mean it. Do something on a different day instead, which is a better gift.
When you are days away and would be buying under pressure. A gift bought in a panic looks like one. Last-minute options is the honest list if you are already there.
When the relationship is genuinely new and you are unsure. Small, or a plan and no object. Nobody has ever damaged a six-week-old relationship by being slightly understated.
Timing, if you order
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.
February is the busiest window of the year for this, so order by late January.
Frequently asked
What should I get my girlfriend for our first Valentine’s? Something modest plus a plan you actually organised. Gift the relationship you are in, not the one you hope to have.
Is it too much to give a big gift early in a relationship? Usually, yes. A large gift a few weeks in reads as intense and puts her in the position of having to match it.
Should I give nothing if we have only been together a few weeks? Give something small, or make a plan with no object. Nothing at all on a date she has been aware of for a fortnight reads as indifference.
Can I give a photo gift for a first Valentine’s? Only if you have the photographs. A few months in, loose prints are the right size. A bound record of six weeks is visibly thin.
How far ahead should I order? By late January. February is the busiest window, and printing runs 5 to 14 days from order to doorstep with weekly Monday dispatch.
