A pregnancy diary is one of the few that actually gets finished, and the reason is structural: there is an end date, and it is close enough to see.

What to print at the front
Not the pregnancy. It has not happened yet.
The front section is the before — the couple, the house as it is now, the life that is about to be reorganised. In two years that section is the more interesting half, because everything after the birth is photographed exhaustively and everything before it stops abruptly.

What goes in the blank part
Left entirely open, most pregnancy diaries become a medical log — dates, weights, appointments. Useful, and not what anybody rereads.
The entries that get read later are the ordinary ones:
- What the flat looks like right now
- What people keep saying, and what is annoying about it
- What you are frightened of, written down once
- The name arguments
- Who visited, and who did not
What to leave out, and this matters
⚠️ Do not print anything that assumes an outcome.
No name on the cover, no due date printed on the object, nothing addressed to a specific baby. A pregnancy diary is given at a point where nothing is certain, and an object that has assumed the ending is a very difficult thing to have in a house if things go differently.
A blank cover and undated pages cost nothing and remove that entirely. This is the single most important line on this page.
Who should give it
A partner, a sister, a close friend. Somebody the pregnant person can be uninteresting in front of.
Not a colleague, and not an in-law, usually — a diary is an invitation to write privately, and that only works from a certain distance.
