50th Birthday Gift Ideas

The first birthday that is usually somebody else's project — the children organise it, several people contribute, and the gift stops being one person's idea.

A fiftieth is the first birthday that usually has an organiser — a son or daughter, a spouse, a sibling running a group chat. There is a venue, a guest list, and four people asking what they should contribute.

That changes the gift from a decision into a project, and the practical advice is about coordination rather than taste.

One gift, many contributors

The single best fiftieth-birthday gift is one object that twenty people contributed to, and the reason is arithmetic: twenty gifts at ₹500 is a table of twenty forgettable things; twenty contributions of ₹500 is ₹10,000, which is more than anything we make costs.

One person collects. Everyone sends. It is designed once. One book, many contributors →

Contributors At ₹150 each Reaches
10 ₹1,500 40-page magazine, or a 20-page album
20 ₹3,000 Any album we make, with copies
30 ₹4,500 An album each for two or three households

What to make

An album, not a magazine. Fifty years is an archive and the object will be handled by a room of people on the night. From ₹1,299 for 20 pages, ₹1,599 for 40. Hardcover albums →

Lamination is worth it here at ₹10 per sheet — a sheet being two pages — because this book gets passed around a party. Is album lamination worth it? →

A card deck for the room. 52 cards at ₹1,699, one per guest. Works as an activity as well as a gift, which a book does not.

What contributors should actually send

Left alone, twenty people send twenty photographs of the same three occasions.

Ask each person for something specific: the year they met, a trip they were on, a photograph nobody else could have. And one written line each — two sentences is enough, and twenty of them is the part that gets read twice.

Copies

At fifty there are usually two or three households who want one. Decide before ordering: the design happens once, the printing is per copy, and we keep your files for seven days after dispatch and then delete them permanently. A second copy for another household →

What actually goes wrong

Three failures, and all three are coordination rather than taste.

Nobody owns it. Twenty people in a group chat agreeing that a book is a lovely idea, and no single person collecting. If you are reading this, that person is you.

The deadline is the party. It should be a week before the party, and the collection deadline a week before that. A book being designed the night before a fiftieth is a book nobody enjoys making.

Late contributions. Somebody sends three photographs after the proof is approved. Set the deadline early and mean it — and if the photograph is genuinely important, revisions are included, so it can go in.

What to write, if you are collecting

The instruction people respond to is short and specific. Something like:

Sending Amma a book for her fiftieth. Could you send me two photographs of you with her — ideally something the rest of us would not have — and two lines about her, by the 12th? Originals rather than WhatsApp forwards if you can.

Two photographs, two lines, one date, one technical note. That gets answered; “send me anything you have” does not.

Timing

5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, dispatched every Monday.

⚠️ Collecting from twenty people is the long pole, not the printing. Allow a month, chase twice, and set a deadline a week before you actually need it.

Frequently asked

What is a good 50th birthday gift? One object several people contributed to. Twenty separate ₹500 gifts is a forgettable table; ₹10,000 pooled is more than anything we make costs.

Album or magazine for a 50th? An album. Fifty years is an archive, and a hardcover survives being passed around a party.

How do we collect photos from twenty people? One person collects, and asks each individually for something specific. General requests to a group chat return nothing.

Should we order more than one copy? Usually two or three, one per household. Decide at the time — files are deleted seven days after dispatch.

How long does it take? The printing is 5 to 14 days. The collecting is a month, and that is the part to plan around.
