At a seventieth there are usually three generations in the room, and the gift has to do something for each of them: mean something to the person it is for, be readable by their children, and be intelligible to grandchildren who were not born for most of it.
Only one kind of object does all three, and the thing that makes it work is not the photographs.
It is the names
A seventieth-birthday book with no names in it stops working the moment the person it is for cannot explain it. That is not a morbid observation, it is the practical one — the whole value of the object over the next thirty years depends on whether a nine-year-old can read it in 2050 and know who anybody is.

Record it while you can ask
The people who can identify a photograph from 1968 are a small group, and the person turning seventy is the main one.

Copies, and how many
Three generations means three to five households. The files are deleted seven days after dispatch, so this is decided once, at the time of ordering.
Include the ordinary years
The instinct at a seventieth is weddings, ceremonies and formal portraits, because those are the photographs that survive.
Push against it where you can. A kitchen, a scooter, an office desk in 1983, a holiday that was not important. Those are the ones grandchildren stop on, because they show a person rather than an occasion.
If the archive is entirely formal portraits, say so in the brief and we will pace it accordingly — a book of forty portraits needs different sequencing from a mixed one.

Ask them who is missing
The step that turns a good seventieth-birthday book into the right one, and it takes five minutes.
Show them the shortlist before it is designed and ask who is not in it. The answer is almost always somebody — a sibling who died young, a friend from a first job, a neighbour from a house they left in 1981.
Those people are usually in one photograph in one album in one house, and nobody would have thought to look for them.
