Almost everyone chooses their strongest photograph for the cover. It is usually the wrong call, and the reason is simple: the cover is the only page that gets looked at every day, and the strongest photograph deserves a spread where it can be looked at properly.
What a cover has to do
Three things, in this order.
Be recognisable from across a room. On a shelf it is seen at two metres, not at arm’s length. A busy image with six faces reads as a grey rectangle at that distance.
Say whose it is. A name, a year, a place. Without it the book is anonymous in five years, which is exactly when it starts mattering.
Survive being seen a thousand times. A dramatic image gets exhausting. A quiet one does not.

What to write on it
Short. Three or four words plus a span of time is almost always enough.
“Us, 2019 to 2026.” “The Delhi Years.” “Everything Before the Wedding.” “Amma.”
Two things to avoid. A quotation about memories, which could sit on anyone’s book and announces that nothing specific was known. And the recipient’s full name in large type, which makes it look like an award rather than a gift.
The image that should not be on the cover
The one that needs the caption. If it only works once explained, it will not work at two metres.
A group photograph with everyone in it. The instinct is fairness. The result is nine faces at thumbnail size.
The most emotional image in the book. Save it. A cover is seen constantly and the strong ones lose their force with repetition — inside, it arrives once and lands.
How it prints
