New Year has a property no other gifting occasion has: it faces both directions at once.
Every other date marks something that happened — a birthday, an anniversary, a festival. The first of January sits exactly between a completed twelve months and an empty twelve months, and a gift can be about either or, unusually, both.
That is worth using, because almost nobody does. Most New Year gifting is a slightly deflated version of Christmas gifting a week earlier.
The three directions
| Facing | What it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Backwards | A record of the year that ended | Anyone. The material is complete |
| Forwards | Something for the year starting | A new job, a move, a first child |
| Both | Half filled, half blank | The best version, and the least used |
The third row is the one this occasion is actually built for. A record of the year that just finished, bound with blank pages for the one starting, is an object that only makes sense in the first week of January — which is precisely why it works.
| Format | How it faces | Ours |
|---|---|---|
| Photo diary | Both — a record plus pages they write in | ₹699 to ₹1,299 |
| Photo magazine | Backwards, the year in order with words | ₹499 to ₹1,099 |
| Print pack | Backwards, 30 photographs from the year | ₹270 |
| Card deck | Forwards — 27 or 52 prompts, one a week | ₹999 or ₹1,699 |
About four photographs fill a page, so a year is usually 16 to 24 pages. Flat ₹70 delivery anywhere in India.
Fifty-two cards is one a week for the year. That is the clearest example of a gift that only works starting in January, and it turns a present into a twelve-month arrangement.
Give it in the first week, not on the 31st
The single most useful piece of timing advice here.
31 December is a bad slot. People are out, distracted, in a group, and frequently drinking. Anything that asks for attention is badly placed.
The first week of January is empty. Everyone is back at work, the festivities are over, and absolutely nothing is arriving for anyone. A gift then lands in a quiet week with no competition — and if it is about the year that just ended, it is being read at exactly the point people are naturally thinking about that anyway.
It also solves the December delivery problem entirely.
The December delivery problem
⚠️ Late December is the second-heaviest delivery window of the Indian year, after the fortnight before Diwali. Christmas, year-end e-commerce and New Year at once.
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.
Ordering in mid-December for a first-week-of-January delivery is the easy path, and it is one of the few occasions where the ideal giving date is on the far side of the congestion rather than inside it.
The habit worth starting
If you make a record of the year once, the interesting thing is what happens the second time.
By year three it is a series, and a series does something a single object cannot: it shows change. The same family, the same friend group, the same couple, one book per January. Nobody plans this and the people who have it did not intend to.
It is also the cheapest way to build a family archive, because each instalment is one ordinary gift rather than a project.
If the year was a good one, say which parts
A record of a year is only as good as its selection, and January selections tend to default to the obvious peaks — the holiday, the wedding, the promotion.
Include the ordinary weeks. The flat, the commute, the Tuesday evenings, the food you ate constantly that year and will have forgotten by the next one. Those are what actually date a year and they are the pages people stop on.
The peaks are already photographed and already remembered. The rest is the part that disappears.
What to avoid
Anything about resolutions. A planner, a habit tracker, a book about improvement. It is a comment, however it is meant.
A repeat of the Christmas gift a week later. Two occasions eight days apart do not both need an object.
Anything on the 31st that needs a reaction. Covered above.
A diary for someone who does not write. The blank half is the whole point and it fails completely on someone who will not use it — the format question in full covers when a diary is the wrong call.
When to skip it
When you did Christmas properly. One of the two is enough, and December is expensive.
When the year was a bad one. A commemorative record of a year someone would rather not revisit is a misjudgement. Face forwards only, or skip it.
When you would be doing it because it is the date. The first of January is not an obligation in most Indian families and never has been.
Frequently asked
What is a good New Year gift? Something that faces both directions — a record of the year that ended with blank pages for the one starting. It is the one occasion built for that.
When should I give it? The first week of January rather than the 31st. That week is empty, nothing else is arriving, and people are already thinking about the year that just ended.
When should I order? Mid-December for a first-week-of-January delivery. That puts the arrival on the far side of the year’s second-heaviest delivery window.
What should I not give at New Year? Anything about resolutions — a planner or a habit tracker reads as a comment — and a repeat of whatever you gave a week earlier at Christmas.
