Christmas gifting in India is shaped differently from Christmas gifting elsewhere, and the difference decides what a good gift is.
Outside Christian families, the occasion runs mostly on Secret Santa — offices, colleges, friend groups, building societies. Which means the typical Indian Christmas gifting problem is not “what to give someone I love” but “what to give someone I barely know, for a fixed small amount, in front of everybody.”
That is a much more specific problem and it has better answers than the ones usually offered.
The Secret Santa problem
Three constraints at once: a budget cap, a recipient you may not know well, and an opening that happens publicly.

The third one is the one people forget. A gift that is a private joke, or that implies you know them better than you do, is uncomfortable in a room of twenty.
What actually works: something consumable and good, something genuinely useful and small, or something specific you observed rather than assumed. The thing they always run out of. The snack they bring to their desk. Good coffee.
⚠️ Avoid the joke gift unless the group does joke gifts. In a mixed office it lands unevenly and the recipient has to perform amusement publicly.
For a colleague you do not know at all, gifting someone you barely know covers the general version of this problem.
For family and close friends
Where Christmas is actually a family occasion — Christian households, and increasingly friend groups who mark it — the calculation is the ordinary one and the year-end timing gives it an advantage.
December is the natural point for a record of the year. It is the only month where “the last twelve months” is a self-evidently complete unit, and the material is all there.

The December timing problem
⚠️ Late December is the second-heaviest delivery window of the Indian year, after the fortnight before Diwali. Courier networks are carrying Christmas, year-end e-commerce and New Year at once.
5 to 14 days from order to doorstep, 5 to 12 to Delhi NCR, flat ₹70 anywhere. Dispatch is weekly on Mondays, so a Friday order catches that week’s dispatch and a weekend order waits seven days. Add two to four days for design and your proof approval.
Order by the first week of December. For an office Secret Santa with a fixed exchange date, that is not cautious — it is the only way something made to order arrives.
What to avoid
Anything with heavy Christmas branding, if you are unsure whether the recipient observes it. In an Indian office the exchange is frequently secular in practice.
A gift card, in a Secret Santa. It is money with a receipt, and everyone can see the amount.
Anything that needs sizing. Clothing in a Secret Santa is a reliable misfire.
Going over the cap. It looks generous and it makes everyone who stuck to it uncomfortable.
Alcohol, unless you know. Same reasoning as any Indian gifting occasion.
When to keep it small
When the group has set a cap. Respect it exactly. The cap exists so nobody is embarrassed.
When you do not know the recipient. Consumable and good beats personal and wrong.
When the office does not really do it. Half-hearted Secret Santas exist and adding effort to one does not rescue it.
When it is not their festival. Ask rather than assuming, and a year-end gift with no Christmas framing works for everyone.
